Karma Revero ‘revealed’:: Fisker-based plug-in to debut in September – video

The 2017 Karma Revero has been revealed online, equipped with a solar roof that the company says can “create enough energy to power the car”.

Known as Fisker Automotive in its troubled former life, Karma Automotive’s new model is largely identical to its donor, the original but still fresh-looking Fisker Karma - a car that that first debuted at the 2008 Detroit motor show.

While few details have been released, the company has added a countdown on its website (to September 8), which is likely for the official reveal and/or when the order books open.

Karma has confirmed the Revero will feature a solar roof (also seen on the Fisker Karma), which the company claims can create enough energy to power the car - most likely for the car’s electronics and infotainment systems as opposed to the powertrain.

Speaking of infotainment, the company briefly previews the new infotainment system on their website, which appears to be a large touchscreen unit. Karma says it’s “simple, intuitive and beautiful”, and seems to control functions like climate control, driving modes (‘Sport’ pictured) power and energy production monitors along with the standard phone and media functions.

Another interesting feature Karma is proud to announce are the hand-painted badges - which it claims has never been done before. The company says it’s “a small but symbolic statement about craftsmanship and individuality”.

The Fisker Karma was a plug-in hybrid driven by two 150kW electric motors, with a 2.0-litre petrol engine used as a range extender. Inside, the original Karma featured a ‘green’ interior trim made of reclaimed wood salvaged from fires and lake bottoms, and leather trim which utilises the entire cow’s hide - rather than just the unmarked sections.

The Fisker Karma’s - and now Karma Revero’s - stunning four-door coupe design was penned by then-CEO Henrik Fisker, who is known for creating the Aston Martin DB9 and V8 Vantage, along with the Dodge Viper-based Force 1 that was revealed earlier this year.

In 2013 Fisker Automotive filed for bankruptcy, after owing around US$168 million ($218.6 million) in loans to the US Department of Energy.

Later in 2014, Chinese multinational firm, Wanxiang Group bought the Fisker company with a bid of US$149.2 million ($194.1 million) at an auction.

Stay tuned for more Karma Revero updates in the coming weeks.
