2018 Audi A7 spied

The next-generation Audi A7 has been spotted for the first time, although only from a great distance.

Thanks to the high level of digital zoom, these first images of the new Audi A7 are rather grainy and low quality, but they do give us a clear indication of the car's proportions and some of its details.

As with the original A7, the new version will have a prominent fastback silhouette, although Audi seems to have eliminated the droopy tail design that's present on today's car. In some of the photos, the prototype has its pop-up rear spoiler deployed.

Up front, the next-generation vehicle looks as though it features slimmer headlights and a new interpretation of Audi's single frame grille.

Under the skin, the new A7 will ride on the Volkswagen Group's MLB platform for front- and all-wheel drive vehicles with longitudinal engines.

The latest iteration of this component set made its debut underneath the second-generation Q7 SUV, and will also show up in the next-generation A8 limousine and Porsche Cayenne SUV.

In terms of motivation, the new A7 is expected to be available with a selection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. These will definitely include V6 and V8 options, but may also include an entry-level four-cylinder powerplants in some markets.

A plug-in hybrid drivetrain option is also likely to appear further into the model's life cycle.
