Old auto i agree, but not on the new German design semiauto as used in our Peugot 308 some manufactures are now advertising better consumption for auto than manuals
Subaru is one outback petrol engine manual 8.9 auto 8.4
Diesel or not I think Subaru has already the answer they will like all the others play the catch up game once they start losing sales to others

one more thing.

me+my wife played a little game, one the next car we buy. I say a brand, she tells me her response.
skoda - fake, imitation.
subaru - fast, niche.
vw - expensive (to run, etc.)

so you see, you don't need all the techie stuff to digest.

thanks for all the comments again.

You will probably have to negotiate on a vehicle that is in stock for the biggest discount. if you have to order one the dealer wont negotiate as hard as he is not going to see his monay for a few months.

The people discussing the Auto for the diesel I have the VW Jetta with a DSG (auto manual) great item utill you have to service $400 labour + Synthetic oil every 60K with the full servicing costs added to the fuel bill I could of kept my 06 Falcon XR6 with lower overall costs.
Looking to replace Jetta with either Subaru Outback Diesel or Mazda CX7 Diesel. Issues are 1 do not like east west engines 2 Subaru Diesel durability. My second vehicle is MY02 Outback 2.5 only issue dual mass fly wheel colapsed at 55K and 31/2 years yet Sub still replaced under warranty. Any one ha the new Sub Diesel for 10-15K yet.
On another note all diesel users should try the Caltex Vortex Diesel currently acheiving extra 50 -100 km to the tank in Jetta

44K drive away for the Diesel Premium sounds like a better discount than what was offered by the Subaru dealership I visited today. They were offering about 1-2K off their advertised price. Is this normal or do I just need to negotiate harder !
What sort of discounts have people been seeing ?

On another note, three child seats across still seems tight in the 2010 Outback. Has anyone had any success with this ?

The contenders were, Skoda Octavia scout, Subaru Outback 2.0D and a X-Trail Diesel, 1YO VW Passat (the only Auto) my limit $45K, All of which I test drove on the same day. I purchased the Subaru for drivability over the others, though the passat a slightly smoother ride. Today it reads 3100kms on the odo, I have fuelled this car 3.5 times since I bought it. 850+kms travelled per tank, doing 40/60 % hwy/city driving. Very happy with this car, economy and the way it drives, manual transmission is a no brainer on a diesel.

i just picked up my brand new outback diesel premium for 44k drive away. i am already impressed with the fuel economy and driveability of the car but it will need a few k's on the clock to loosen up as it is very tight. i can't believe some of these 'self proclaimed experts' talking about subaru reliablity issues and one wanka on here telling everybody that the engine dies on him at 4300 rpm. max torque for the diesel is 2400 and max power at 3600revs so why you would rev this little diesel past that is beyond me, this thing pulls from about 1600 revs and is ready to change gears at 2400. i have just come out of an 06 xt forester and loved it, never ever had any mechanical(or other) problems with that car and thrashed it every day of my ownership, it was a rocket. and i have never met another subaru owner that said his car was a lemon, ever. some of you tossa's should keep your uneducated and unresearched opinions to themselves. life is too short to read nonsense.
