Mitsubishi teases ‘crossover MPV’ concept ahead of August debut

Mitsubishi will unveil yet another SUV concept next month, inspired again by the new styling language that first appeared with the GR-HEV concept in 2013.

Apart from its recently facelifted Outlander and an even milder refresh for the compact ASX in overseas markets, Mitsubishi has yet to bring its new look to market. This latest offering, however, appears the closest yet to a production-ready design.

Clearly inspired by last year's sports-styled eX concept, this as-yet unnamed "crossover MPV" will debut a taller and more spacious cabin atop a subtly refined version of the eX's look.

Mitsubishi has revealed little else about the concept, except to promise that it will combine "the toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV". One might ordinarily expect that an SUV would always be both tough and versatile - but, of course, that's often not the case in today's market.

A seven-seat interior will feature, but its small dimensions will likely make that third row a child-only affair.

The new concept will debut at next month's Indonesia motor show, which could also hint at an eventual focus on Asian markets.

Later, in September, the car maker will unveil its new Ground Tourer concept in Paris. Little is known about that show car, although we can likely view it as the first look at the next Outlander SUV.

The current Outlander launched in 2012 and was given a facelift in 2015, which means a next-generation model is unlikely to appear any sooner than late next year.
