Drove my uncles Golf Gti (current model) and I wasn't that impressed. The DSG although easier to live with during a daily commute to work, just doesn't offer the same "as one" feeling with the car as a manual does due to the lack of control. For example, hitting a twisty section dropping the car down into 2nd gear from 3rd or 4th in a manual would radically pull the car back making breaking easier or even alleviating the need to break. However in the DSG the sensation is rather taimed with a slight pull back, but not enough to aid breaking. Also due to the lack of a clutch, finding the right rpms for certain corners is also not as easy.

However DSG gearbox's are alot better than standard torque converters.

Also, This is isn't a criticism of the car, just noting the negative aspects of a DSG gearbox.

The main issue with the golf gti is the ESP which in the wet shudders (brake dabs continiously) like a maniac. Its extremely irratating! Hopefully in future generations ESP can be fully turned off.

I have a black (?Black magic I think they call it) mkV gti 3 dr and I can tell you it scratches like a bitch. In spite of all the after-sale *paint protection* I am really disappointed how the paint has aged. Neighbour has a candy white and still looks stunning after 3 years; will upgrade to CW 5 door next time round. Personally I think the CW makes this car look sweet, particularly in the 5 door. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi MyGTI - I swapped the Detroits for the Standard wheels and got the discount as I was buying floor stock. I still can't decide between which colour is nicest (CW or CSG). I guess that means they are both equally nice! The reason I like CW is that it does not show the scratches and marks that all cars get over time whilst the CSG looks fabulous after a wash (not). Still in 5 years I suspect the CW will look better.

Whatever - how the car drives is really what matters most so I am a very happy camper.

Hey there another Simon,
so what did you do with the 18" Detroits?
Our dealership couldnt get us the 18's cause they waiting list was just too darn long :-( so we still have the
17" Denvers on our candy white.
Also, why would you now go with the CW over the CSG?
Had to laugh cause these two colours were our prefered choices and I sometimes wonder if we should have gone CSG?
One thing I will say with the white is that it sure shows
the black dust/ exhaust silt? that collects on the boot
lip...reckon your colour would hide this better.

Whats it look like after a few poishes eg do swirl marks show up on the dark metalic?
One advantage with white I guess.
Anyway still LOVE this car, just a real fun drive, still brings a smile to my dial :-)

For those of you who have read this far...

I have a 2010 5dr DSG in Carbon Steel and like anyone who owns one of these I absolutely love it.

For those that know their GTI's, I have owned a Golf Mk1 GTI (with 1.8 ltr engine) and a Mark 2 GTI 16v (I even had a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9) but then I stopped as I felt that VW lost its way a bit with the GTI unti the V (too fat and not sporty anymore). This GTI really reminds me of those cars and it puts a smile on my face every time - even in the commute. I cannot recommend this car highly enough - for me it is a "poor mans Porsche".

My only regret is getting the Grey - if I had my time over I would have the White now. Plus the wife has "appropriated it" so I hardly get to drive it now. It says a lot about a car when you fight over who get to drive it!

Also I downgraded to wheels to the Standard rims from the 18" Detroits I had as I commute and I wanted a softer ride.

So am I the only person who thinks that car companies spend millions getting their cars to handle well and then misguided souls think they can do a better job by adding after market rims?

Picked up the GTI 3 weeks ago.
Candy White- MY10 5 dr DSG leather, dynaudio, dealer fitted front/rear sensors, tint, hope to change to 18" Detroits.

So far...LOVING IT!
As I am only 160cm tall, and the seat bottoms having no tilt adjustment...I found the leather didnt feel quiet so padded under the knees, so better option(wanted leather
anyway. Due to current promo what a good saving, sweetened the deal :-)

Yep, Dennis after owning a GTI for just over 3 weeks now,
we think the steering wheel is great, very comfortable
and doesn't "feel or look cheap"
So much to love about this hot hatch

I recently bought a demo Mk 5 GTI in Blue Graphite colour. It came with leather, DSG and sunroof. It was more expensive than a new Mark 6 without the leather or sunroof but I wouldn't compromise on the colour! Given the roads and speed limits in Australia, probably don\'t need the XDL. Will wait now for a good deal on a R20!
