Volkswagen’s new mid-size sedan sketch released

By Matt Brogan |

In a bid to tackle big sellers, such as the likes of Camry and Accord Euro, Volkswagen is planning a new mid-sized sedan that will sit between its Jetta and Passat models.

The as yet unnamed sedan has so far been nothing more than a rumour, until this sketch was released by the manufacturer earlier today.

The new sedan will no doubt go quite some way to helping Volkswagen achieve its rather ambitious sales goals.

Pricing and specification details have not yet been announced though we can expect delivery timing of early-to-mid 2011.

put a ford badge on it and you would be looking at a shrunk down FG Falcon. Does this mean the Passat will get bigger?

    • Martin

      No you wouldn’t.

  • NIK516

lol yeh, not very interesting , but with vw its all in the small details.
    but this is a 2006 design :(

  • Reckless1

There’s bugger all size difference between Passat and the named “competitors”, and the Passat is not 2 sizes larger than Jetta.

But the same argument applies to Camry/Aurion – they are really the same (boring) car size.

But if they build it, it won’t come to Aus, for the same reasons they won’t bring the Scirocco – it would steal sales from Jetta/Passat just like VW Australia thinks the Scirocco would steal Golf sales.

But it is the way to increase market share. Audi has a gazillion models, many hard to tell apart, but their sales are growing relentlessly worldwide.

    eh… i coulda drawen that.

This is interesting turn of events for VW.

First they produce the Phaeton which flops in the US and Australia mostly because people could not wrap their head around a $100K plus VW.

Second they forge an initial deal with Maserati for them to produce an Italian version of the Tourag swapping for the Quatroporte so VW can Germanize it to fit between the then Passat and Phaeton.

Now VW is considering slotting a car between the Jetta and Passat which for them ironically and actually makes way more sense.

    • Greasy

I dont think Phaeton was ever on sale in Oz…

    • Dude

I belive that this car will be larger than the Passat but less premium, not a car slotting between the Jetta and Passat, aimed at the US market only while leaving passat to do its thing in Europe.

very nice design but not really the most original or innovative. Better looking than a Jetta which is a Golf with a trunk.

This model would make sense if the Passat were to move up half a class in size, then they’d have the full range of classes covered.

    Small – Jetta
    Mid-sized – NMS
    Large – Passat
    Executive – Phaeton

Currently, the Jetta and Passat sit in between their brackets because of their physical size. But logically though, this new model won’t likely be successful anywhere other than the US. Europe treats the Passat as its large car, and it doesn’t need to be any bigger etc.

In the US the Passat is “not appreciated” (VW’s words) and this NMS would only make sense to replace the Jetta (which is successful in the US) and allow it to properly occupy the mid-size category.

  • Baddass

This renders the Passat useless. It will have to be the same size as the Jetta, because there is barely a difference between Jetta and Passat. Stupid idea, unless it replaces the Passat, which is awkward looking.

And as for a Mazda6, Accord and Liberty competitor, what does that make the Jetta? Will the next gen Jetta be smaller, or simply not exist? At least Audi’s enormous model line fit cohesively with each other, unlike VW.

  • zahmad

Main problem is it’s own in-house rivals from Skoda & Audi…

If VW do indeed go ahead with this new model, we may find that the standard Passat will be dropped and the Passat CC will then become the Passat.

The new vehicle will then fit in just under the current “standard” Passat and will be priced a few $K below the current standard Passat. The standard Passat will then be upscaled to the CC and will remain priced at the CC Price, or may even drop a few thousand $K to give it a competitive advanatage against the Mercedes C class, BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS series etc. i.e the CC will be then become the standard Passat or vice versa.

    • Baddass

I never thought of it that way. Good observation, and it sounds pretty legitimate to me.

Finaly, VW should take on Toyota head on and leave the premium stuff to Audi
Considering they are ment to be the peoples car.
Design looks GREAT, nice clean lines… kinda like a new version of the old passat. The current one is FUGLY.. way to fussy and overdone.
They should take a step further and make this the new passat.
The current Passat is too pricy to be a real player..its stuck in a no mans land between Mondeo man and BMW suits.
Its about time the german maufacturer took on the almighty camary.
    Good luck to them!
Oh and an all wheel drive, TSI engined sprots version would be awsome.

  • Dude

    VW…the German Toyota

    Yaris: Polo
    Corrolla: Golf/jetta
    Camary: NMS
    Rav4: tiguan
    Prado: Touareg

People are missing the point. In the USA the (Mexican made) Jetta is the big seller, outselling the Golf – Americans just don’t relate to hatches – most of the Japanese brand American made cars are sedans. not hatches. Just look at the Corolla.

This new car is a US market only product – won’t replace the Passat in Europe where that car has a big part of the official car/taxi/corporate car market – many more sales than the opposition Peugeot/Laguna/Mondeo/Insignia – at least outside Britain.

  • Shakeel

Maybe this could replace the Pasaat downunder and take up a position beneath the Phaeton in the US. It looks ok but the price may be crazy.
