Volkswagen launches greenest Golf yet
October 28, 2009 by Matt Brogan
In July, CarAdvice brought you news that Volkswagen had announced a new, highly-efficient Golf model which returns 3.41L/100km on the combined cycle and emits just 107 g/km of carbon dioxide. Now a new model is available to order (not yet available in Australia) – the most efficient production Golf ever – which achieves 3.16L/100km combined and emit a class-leading 99 g/km.
The new Golf BlueMotion uses as its basis the standard Golf’s 1.6-litre TDI common rail engine with 77kW of power and maximum torque of 250Nm, developed at 1,500 rpm. This engine endows the new model with a zero to 100km/h time of 11.3 seconds and a top speed of 190km/h.
To further improve fuel efficiency the Golf BlueMotoion include a Start/Stop system, regenerative braking, hill hold, longer gear ratios, low rolling resistance tyres, a multifunction computer – showing recommended gear changes for maximum economy – and sports suspension.
Aerodynamic improvements, thanks to a sports styling kit, also improve efficiency as well as distinguishing the Golf BlueMotion from others in the range.
The new Golf BlueMotion is priced from £17,325 (AUD$30,950).

looks good, but a little on the expensive side.
When it is compared to its big competitor the Toyota Prius it’s price is very competitive. Also unlike the Ford Fiesta Econetic the size, space and inclusions list is comparable as well. Whilst producing a lot better fuel consumption and with no highly poluting batteries.
Unbelievable! This level of fuel economy without using a full hybrid drive system. See, emissions under 100 g in a medium sized car is achievable without a full hybrid system, bio diesel BlueMotion Golfs here we come!
34k on road.make love to the enviroment,or buy a top of the range mazda3,diesel cdx cruze, hell top range anything…
I can`t believe you mentioned a Cruze, I mean a Mazda 3 is fine but a Cruze is awful.
mate are you still on about that. Nearly all the Cruze haters have now gone and driven one and they have said that while i may not be at Mazda 3 level yet it is pretty damned good for the cash. And while the Cruze may not have the resale of this Golf, it is much better value and quality is on par.
The quality of the Cruze is not on par with either Mazda Toyota or VW, maybe Ford, Hyundai, Kia and others
Plus, the Cruze’s fuel economy is dreadful for a diesel car of that size – 6.8L/100km for the auto!!
Fantastic little city run-about….
Your move Toyota, is it time for a Diesel synergy drive or what?
3.16L/100Km for a 5 seater, thats almost as good as the “greatest invention since the wheel” SIDI 900kms on a tank effort :)
And for those who thought Hyundai and Holden are catching up, only to realise they are still 10 years behind. Imaging what they (VW) are currenlty busy working on in the lab.
“Imaging what they (VW) are currenlty busy working on in the lab”
How to turn percieved build quality into reliability? I think VW are 10 years behind Hyundai on that one!
But VW is 10 years ahead of Ford and Holden.LOL
… and it costs $1000 to service lolx
Rubbish! It will be more like 350 to service
The car is a piece of Genius from the car company that will knock Toyota from the top spot before 2018.
VW will only knock Toyota off it it achieves comparable reliability… so far VW reliability is only middle ranked, way behind Toyota and most Japanese. VW ranks with GM, Ford, BMW and Benz in the reliability stakes. This is from a Toyota and a VW owner. If VW can step up in reliability then Toyota should be worried, for now, they make innovative, attractive and outwardly high quality looking and feeling vehicles… but clearly not the most reliable.
Words of wisdom from a non-owner.
$1000 to service? Our 2008 Passat diesel has 50,000 on the clock and up to this point servicing has cost about $1600 in total.
Its a runabout that will cost $40k after a few options, buy an i30 save $15000 worth of fuel economy or a decade of depreciation and enjoy better reliability, performance and servicing cost.
Its one for the Latte lovers though hey Car Fanatic?
Oh, hi 70sDatsun, azzagarnmate?
Wrong person, Mr upmarket Golf owner…..!!!
Sorry, mate. Anyway, what do you think of the economy of this Golf here? FANTASTIC, ISN’T IT? Quite an achievement, wouldn’t you say? Nobody else does economy like this in a car this size, do they? No sirree. That Golf there, he sure looks like a liddle bewdy, duncharekkun?
I never thought solely that economy was the be it and end it when purchasing a car, there are other major things to consider. A good plug in for the times of fuel awareness but other than that its a Golf with less poke and would be boring as hell to drive! A Gti on the other hand………………….
Nope not me although I could see people driving this with a sweater knotted over their shoulders, people who play squash, general toff’s.
this is a great middle of the road between Fiesta econetic and Prius hybrid
for those who find Fiesta impractically small or Prius too complex for a car
Great car. For those of you out there that are comparing the quality of a Golf to an i30, read on.
Ive had an i30 for just over 12 months. The build quality & engineering are a step forward for Hyundai – but still a long way behind VW or Toyota, Mazda, etc. My car has already started developing a few rattles (the diesel engine makes some interior trim rattle upon acceleration) and the plastics (apart from the dash) are looking and feeling old…cant wait for changeover time.
There should be no comparison between the i30 and this car, one is for the budget conscience buyer and the other for people who are willing to spend more to get a car which meets their expectations and standards. The Hyundai is very good for the price and the Volkswagen is VERY good for it’s price! If most people bought the Hyundai and no the golf then there are many buyers out there who use price and perhaps reliability as the most important criteria, that phenomena shoulds awfully boring to me.
