Mazda 2, B Series, BT-50, RX-8 recalled for Takata airbags: 162,000 vehicles affected

The string of Takata airbag recalls this week continues with Mazda issuing notices for over 162,000 vehicles, including the popular Mazda 2 small car, B Series and BT-50 utes, and the RX-8 sports car.

Adding to the Chrysler and Mitsubishi recalls this week, and the Subaru recall issued last week, this latest notice adds to the wider Takata airbag scandal that has affected close to 60 million vehicles globally.

Last year Mazda recalled nearly 80,000 Mazda 6, RX-8, E-Series Van, T-Series Cab Chassis, B2500 ute/cab chassis and B2600 ute/cab chassis vehicles as part of the Takata campaign, bringing the company’s recall count to more than 240,000 units.

Details of models, production dates and number of affected vehicles are listed in the table below:

The Japanese car maker reports that the front airbag inflators could rupture and deploy abnormally in the event of an accident, as a result of continued exposure to moisture.

As detailed in previous Takata-related recalls, an inflator rupture could cause metal fragments to be released from the inflators, posing a significant injury or even death risk to occupants of the vehicle.
