2017 Mercedes-AMG GT roadster spied

The Mercedes-AMG GT roadster has been spied undergoing testing on an autobahn in Germany.

Last weekend Mercedes and AMG unveiled the more powerful and more hard core GT R coupe, and now we know that the pair are working on a convertible to complement the GT coupe range.

Snapped only from the rear, we can see that the GT roadster has a soft top with a glass rear window.

Under the bonnet, the droptop GT will feature the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine used in the coupe and other AMG-branded models. It will likely be offered in both regular 340kW/600Nm and 375kW/650Nm S trims.

Drive will be sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Extra underfloor bracing will likely be required to keep body flex at bay and, as result, the convertible should weigh more than the coupe, which tips the scales at 1615kg in base trim.

Despite that, we don't expect performance to be adversely affected. The base GT coupe, which will soon join the Australia range, is able to tick off the 0-100km/h standard in 4.0 seconds and hit a top speed of 304km/h.

The more powerful GT S reduces the 0-100km/h time to 3.8 seconds, and is capable of a top speed of 310km/h.

Tobias Moers, chairman of Mercedes-AMG, has told AutoExpress that the convertible will go on sale in 2017, but may debut in late 2016.

If the convertible is offered down under, expect it to land in local showrooms some time during the second half of 2017.
