Deals On Wheels – European brand special

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, our look at factory-backed special offers for all you (end of financial year) new car shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

This is a special version, focusing on super-sharp discounts that can easily be found on a number of European brands as we hit the end of the financial year. Go on, be different.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Progression

Alfa Romeo is offering the entry Giulietta Progression for $26,500 drive-away if you buy before June 30, representing a saving of close to $6000 based on our calculations (which are taking the RRP and adding standard on-road costs).

The Italian Giulietta Progression may not be as polished as a Volkswagen Golf, but it has way more charm. Power comes from a 1.4-litre turbo engine with 88kW/215Nm, matched to a six-speed manual. Properly Euro, that self-shifter.

Standard features include 16-inch alloys, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, 5.0-inch touchscreen with USB/Bluetooth, leather steering wheel, LED daytime lights and heated side mirrors.

Audi quattro event

During the Audi quattro drive sales event, you can score some factory bonuses on more than 50 models.

Many Audi quattro AWD versions (passenger and SUV alike) excluding the R8 get free registration, stamp duty and CTP, a five-year warranty and three-years/45,000km of scheduled servicing thrown in for free before June 30.

It’s not a deal maker, but it’s a good sweetener.

BMW Z4 sDrive20i

The rear-drive BMW Z4 roadster is getting long in the tooth, and it remains the love-or-loathe proposition it’s always been.

At its RRP of $80,500 plus on-road costs, it’s frankly hard to recommend. But unbeknownst to us until recently, you can buy the Z4 sDrive20i for $69,900 drive-away.

Furthermore, you get with this an additional M Sport Package (18-inch alloys, M Sport carbon/aluminium/anthracite trimmings inside and out, sports seat, lowered suspension) or Design Pure Traction Package (Alcantara upholstery, sports seats, unique cabin trims) for free.

The Z4 sDrive20i comes with a 135kW/270Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that hustles the car from 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.9 seconds, sending torque to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Citroen C4 Picasso

We love the Citroen C4 Picasso (it's a regular 9/10), but Australian buyers don’t. Lamborghini has sold significantly more Huracans this year, in fact. Remarkable.

Now is the time to go have a look at this French five-seat family car, which we rate as being better than a BMW 2 Series Active Tourer or Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Because at $39,990 drive-away, you’re saving upwards of $5000.

Standard features include a 121kW turbo-petrol engine with six-speed auto, a 12-inch panoramic HD screen, a 7.0-inch infotainment system with 8gb storage, sat-nav and a 350-degree camera, keyless start, panoramic glass roof and LED daytime lights. Luxury.

One note: be sure to check whether the car you test is a 2015-plate or 2016-plate vehicle, for resale purposes.

Renault Clio Authentique

Want to save a few bucks on the tres chic Renault Clio Authentique? If you’re happy to buy a car without km on the odometer but with MY15 build plates, you’ll get one for $15,990 drive-away if you buy before June 30. If you buy one with demonstrator km, you’ll pay $14,990.

In other words, you can essentially have one of the coolest city cars on the market for Hyundai Accent money — if you’re happy to drive a manual, of course. This gearbox, paired to the 66kW three-cylinder turbo engine, is actually a little cracker.

Standard features include cruise control, Bluetooth and LED DRLs, but more importantly you also get a five-year/unlimited km warranty with full roadside assist over the period, for peace of mind. You also get capped price servicing for three years.

Skoda Fabia wagon

As far as segment-busting cars go, the Skoda Fabia wagon is hard to look past. With 505 litres or cargo space, expanding to 1370L with the back seats folded, it offers Mazda CX-5 cabin space in a light car body. Mary Poppins bag-style.

At present, Skoda Australia is covering all but $350 of the on-road taxes and charges you pay on top of the RRP, potentially saving you thousands. The 66TSI manual is $17,490 drive-away, and the 81TSI DSG auto is $21,790 drive-away.

If you have your heart set on a small SUV for the high driving position, look the other way. But if you want the absolute maximum space for minimum coin, look no further. Hell, the new one even looks decent, unlike the frumpy previous-generation version.

Volvo XC60 D4 Luxury AWD

Volvo Cars Australia has been getting a lot of mentions of late in our deals on wheels wraps.

This week we’ll look at the 140kW/420Nm diesel-fired XC60 D4 AWD Luxury, which is going for $59,888 drive-away, which is about $7000 cheaper than the full whack (RRP plus on-roads).

Standard fare includes a powered tailgate, City Safety autonomous braking and integrated child booster cushions. This is Volvo, after all. To sweeten the deal, it will also give you three-years worth of free servicing.

Bottom line is, the XC60 is getting a little long in the tooth, and frankly isn’t at the cutting edge of its segment anymore. But it also plays to the Swedish brand’s strengths, and remains a very reasonably upper-crust family hauler for the money.
