2017 Aston Martin DB11 makes its Australian debut

The Aston Martin DB11 has made its debut in Australia, unveiled in Sydney yesterday.

Pricing has also been announced, with the DB11 priced from $428,032 before on-road costs. Deliveries to Australian buyers will start around October.

Australia and New Zealand regional manager Kevin Wall said the DB11 is essentially carrying the weight of the future of the Aston Martin brand on its shoulders.

"It has to be a game changer because it’s been some time since we’ve launched a new model of this ilk. We haven’t had anything since DB9 under the DB badge," Wall said.

The DB11 is an entirely new car - except for the door handles, that is. They carry through from the model it replaces, the DB9, that was originally launched back in 2003.

It marks the beginning of a new phase for the luxury British brand, heralding the start of a fresh era of design, technology, engineering and ingenuity.

"What it particularly represents, is the first car in what’s known as the 'Second Century' plan. As we launch into the second century of the development of the Aston Martin brand there is a product development program which is s headlined by DB11, so this is the start," Wall said.

"A lot of our competitors, if not all of our competitors, have gone through a renaissance of sorts. Some more successfully than others - mostly successful though - but this is our time."

Aston Martin's 'Second Century' design language is clearly different, but still features the signature styling elements that make its cars so distinctive.

In fact, the DB11 was recently named Production Car of the Year at the Car Design Award event held in Italy.

The DB11 is sharp and angular, yet still incorporates sweeping lines and curves with an elongated bonnet and a muscular rear stance. The aluminium roof forms a strong arc from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.

The body is lighter, thanks to its bonded aluminium structure and it features innovative aerodynamics.

There are air intakes over each of the front wheel arches, as well as two over the centre of the bonnet, that help cool the brakes as well as funnel air along the side channels, through 'aero blades' and out through a vent on the boot that also features a deployable spoiler.

It's also the first Aston to have a turbocharged engine. The 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 was designed in-house and produces 447kW and 700Nm. The DB11 can sprint from zero to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds. Read more about the specifications here.

Wall said the company is very happy with the level of interest in the car so far in Australia.

"We’re touring this car around Australia. In a couple of weeks time I’ll have a better handle on exactly what sort of order bank we have."

Patrik Nilsson, president of Aston Martin Asia Pacific, said, "We are thrilled to unveil DB11 in the Australian market. We are already experiencing unprecedented demand in this region for DB11, reaffirming the strong affinity for Aston Martin in Australia.”

The DB11 underwent hot weather testing in Australia earlier this year, and CarAdvice had the opportunity to drive the prototype at the time. Read about Anthony Crawford's experience here.
