The next-generation Audi SQ5 will reportedly feature a 48V electrical system, and an electric compressor for reduced lag.
Oliver Hoffman, head of powertrain development at Audi, has told Autocar that the next SQ5 will still be motivated by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel. While the current car (pictured here) employs a twin-turbo diesel setup, the new SQ5 will feature one exhaust-driven turbocharger aided by an electric compressor.
The electric compressor system made its debut in a production vehicle earlier this year when the SQ7 was launched. In the larger SUV, the compressor is powered by a 48V electrical system, and can get up to speed within 250 milliseconds.
Like the SQ7’s V8 diesel motor, the next-generation SQ5’s V6 will also feature Audi Valvelift System.
According to the Hoffman, the engine in the new SQ5 could have been tuned to deliver around 290kW, but, in the interests of driveability, power has been capped at about 270kW.
That’s still a handy 20kW increase over today’s SQ5 Plus, which utilises a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine, and is rated at 250kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
The new SQ5 is expected to make its debut next year. Like the volume selling Q5 range, the next-generation SQ5 is expected to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB architecture for front- and all-wheel-drive cars with longitudinal engines.
Lightweight materials, such as high-strength steel and aluminium, will see the second-generation Q5 shed around 100 kilograms.
