2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet:: Australian line-up confirmed

The all-new 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet will be offered in two standard and two powered-up AMG forms when it hits Australia in November.

The first-ever C-Class Cabriolet will be a sportier and more youthful option, alongside the long-running E-Class Cabriolet badge - which will soon also debut in a new-generation form.

Pricing and final specifications of the topless C-Class are yet to be revealed, however its expected to carry a notable premium over the C-Class Coupe. This is due due not only to its convertible design, but also its higher set of standard equipment.

Australian-delivered C-Class Cabriolet models will come standard with the AMG sports body kit, acoustic roof and Mercedes-Benz Aircap system. The models' higher rate of specification is meant to emphasise its market position in contrast to its larger stablemate.

“We’ve got the E-Class Cabriolet, which is positioned for an older customer that prefers luxury and comfort, and the C-Class Cabriolet will be for a sportier driver.” Mercedes-Benz Australia public relations and product communications manager, Jerry Stamoulis, told CarAdvice in Munich today.

The cabriolet soft-top roof will function at speeds of up to 50km/h and open or close in around 20 seconds. It adds an additional 50kg of weight to the car, although with the extra hardware changes for the cabriolet (such as extra chassis strengthening), it’s around 120kg heavier than its equivalent coupe variant.

The C200 will be the entry point into the range, however Stamoulis said Mercedes expects the C300 and C43 AMG to be the two most popular models in the initial phase of the model’s lifecycle.

All variants share the same powertrain setup as the C-Class Coupe, which see the C200 powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 135kW of power and 300Nm of torque.

The C300 cabriolet is powered by the same 2.0-litre four cylinder but with 180kW of power and 370Nm of torque thanks to a different state of tune.

The C43 AMG, which will also arrive in coupe, sedan and estate form at the same time as the cabriolet, is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 with 270kW and 520Nm and delivers its power to all four wheels via Mercedes-AMG’s 4MATIC drivetrain.

The top of the range full-blown AMG version, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Cabriolet, gets a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 375kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

AMG claims a 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds, making it 0.7 seconds quicker than the C43.

It will likely be the most expensive C63 S on offer alongside its coupe, estate and sedan siblings.

Like the C-Class sedan, all Mercedes-Benz C-Class cabriolets are sourced for the Australian market from Germany, alongside the Estate and Coupe.
