Genesis, Hyundai’s new luxury marque, is planning an electric vehicle, although launch timing has yet to be announced.
Manfred Fitzgerald, once brand director for Lamborghini and now head of the Genesis brand, told Reuters and other news organisations, “We will definitely go, as [the] Genesis brand, down the road of alternative propulsions and it is very, very obvious that EV is definitely on the map”.
The Genesis chief believes that “full electric cars will be the future in the auto industry”. It’s not known when Genesis’ electric vehicle will debut, however, or if it will be a standalone model.
Also unclear is whether the Genesis EV fits into the brand’s publicly announced roadmap.
Those plans, revealed when Genesis was split off from Hyundai, call for the brand to have a six vehicle line-up by 2020, including competitors for the Mercedes-Benz C-, E- and S-Class, as well as a BMW 4 Series coupe competitor, and two SUVs.
Last month, Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai USA, told reporters that Genesis is preparing to launch plug-in hybrid options for some of its vehicles. These PHEVs, Zuchowski said, would smooth the transition to hydrogen fuel-cell cars.

Fitzgerald made his statement about EVs at the Busan motor show that’s currently in full swing in South Korea.
Depending on the market, the large sedan – which plays in the same class as more established rivals like the BMW 5 Series – will gain a 272kW/509Nm 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 and the new Genesis Sport variant pictured above.
