New Volvo S60

You know times are changing when Volvo starts making good looking cars! Dear loyal readers, feast your eyes upon one of the best looking Volvos of all time, the all new Volvo S60.
Sit still, the images are CG (computer generated artist impressions) and so far Volvo has not confirmed or denied the styling. Volvo Australia spokesman Todd Hallenbeck had no comment for CarAdvice. The new shape (whatever it may be) will hit the European market around 2009 hoping to steal some of the new BMW 3 series’ thunder.
Autocar (UK) reports the S60 is based on the same technology used to build the new Ford Mondeo and Volvo S80 (which CarAdvice will be road testing soon). All is not good news though, according to Autocar the S60 may very well spell the end of the Volvo S40 – but a little sacrifice is not a bad thing.
If Volvo engineers have their way, the S60 will be marketed towards car enthusiasts and not just Volvo’s typical “safety is everything” market. The new S60 will potentially be powered by a whole range of engines, from 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesels to five-cylinder engines currently found in the Volvo range.
Expect a lot more on the S60 in the next 12 months.

Just as soon as Ford turned Volvo around, they are going to sell it off.
They are doing a bit of a PanAm, ie selling off everything, the only problem is one day the draw will be empty and nothing more to sell…..
I liked both SAAB and VOLVO when they where proper odd Swedish jobs, not like know rebirthed Focus/Mondeo etc etc

I can’t believe its a Volvo! Computer generated or not, Volvo need to make this car, I’d buy it over a 3-series BMW too!
Definatley a good looker…lets see if this actually makes it to production though.
this ones quite a looker. I never really liked the design of volvo cars, but this one i quite fancy. The rear quarter looks a bit like a lexus IS and in the second picture it looks a bit like a subaru liberty though. THats okay because i like both those cars as well.

I’d also buy it over a 3 series. Volvo just need to keep a sharp eye on their power outputs and performance dynamics in some of their cars.
I agree Tony especially on the poverty pac 318, Volvo build a great car these days. Interiors are some of the best I have seen and along with their stereos never had a car with a better standard one than Volvo’s. For those never driven one do yourself a favor. Front wheel drive is a pain if you want real performance though,torque steering is a bitch in any front wheel drive.
Ooooh, a Volvo that actually has me a little excited :)
Would love one with the turbo five but alas will be out of my price range.

Ha-ha… My point is that people have the option of getting a Mondeo if you really like the styling rather then paying a higher premium for the Volvo since there is a sharing of chassis between Ford & the Swedish carmaker. No doubt the s60 might be worth the extra dosh for things like xenon & all-wheel drive.
Would be interesting to see what the S60 wagon version would look like since I would get the V50 in the current Volvo line up or even better the S80, rather then the S40 sedan.

I will say that although this car is impressive looking, there have been Volvos in the past that could be considered some of the best looking cars of all time, namely the P1800 and the 122S. Oddly enough some of the 240 models look very nice compared to modern era cars, although at the time of their production they did look very unfashionable if not strange. Just my 2 cents.
Volvo needs to step up and cut loose from Ford . Volvo has the knowhow and al it takes to make nice cars , if they only made a few extra models and some extra engines ( smaller ones )they would sell quite wel . So to the people of Gent who make the cars find other investors and make volvo a leading brand again .

I think its a great and really good step ahead for Volvo.
