Lexus IS models join Takata airbag recall in Australia

A number of Lexus models have this week joined the the enormous ongoing Takata airbag recall.

The company's local arm has been forced to issue a recall notice this week over fears the affected cars have been fitted with defective Takata airbag inflators.

According to the car maker, the recall affects approximately 21,750 vehicles in Australia, built between 2005 and 2011.

As with all recalls in the ongoing Takata scandal, it is understood that the front passenger’s side airbag inflator may be susceptible to moisture intrusion. Over time, this makes the inflator assembly more likely to rupture during an accident, increasing the likelihood of injury to the vehicle’s occupants.

The affected vehicles are as follows:

410 examples of the IS F with a VIN range of JTHXXXXXXX5004688 to JTHXXXXXX5010170, built between August 7, 2008 and December 13, 2011.

1140 examples of the IS 250C with a VIN range of JTHXXXXXXX2500065 to JTHXXXXXX2522663 built between April 16, 2009 and November 2, 2011.

18,950 examples of the IS 250 with a VIN range of JTHXXXXXXX2000014 to JTHXXXXXX5167140 built between August 31, 2005 and December 27, 2011.

1250 examples of the IS 350 with a VIN range of JTHXXXXXXX5025201 to JTHXXXXXX5029666 built between August 2, 2010 and December 26, 2011.

Also note that not all vehicles in the VIN range have been affected.

Lexus will notify owners of affected vehicles via mail once parts become available. Lexus says that, given the scale of the recall, this will be in early 2017.

The car maker also confirmed there have been no injuries or incidents reported in Australia as a result of the issue.
