2017 Mercedes-Benz G350d Professional unveiled – UPDATED

With the new Mercedes-Benz G350d Professional, the automaker has updated its "highly purist" off-roader with a few more modern amenities, and extra lashings of power and torque.

Under the bonnet, the G350d Professional has a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine that produces 180kW of power at 3600rpm, and 600Nm of torque between 1600 and 2400rpm. That's good for a 0-100km/h time of 8.8 seconds, a top speed of 150km/h, and an EU fuel consumption rating of 9.9L/100km.

That's significantly more power and torque than the G300 CDI Professional it replaces. The G300 CDI Professional made do with just 135kW and 400Nm from its 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel. Fuel economy on the old model was rated at 11.7L/100km.

The G350d Professional's diesel motor is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission, and a permanent four-wheel drive system with three sequentially lockable differentials.

The G350d Professional rides on black 16-inch alloy wheels paired with 265/70 all-terrain tyres. Compared to the regular G350d, the Professional has an extra 10mm of ground clearance, for total of 245mm.

Approach and departure angles have also been improved to 36 and 39 degrees, respectively, whereas the bog-standard G350d is rated at 30 degrees at both ends. Mercedes-Benz claims a fording depth of 600mm for the Professional, and a towing capacity of 3200 kilograms.

While the G300 CDI Professional was fitted with an older, blockier iteration of the G-Class interior from "W461" generation, the G350d Professional has the more modern "W463" dashboard.

This includes a more modern entertainment system, as well as a standard multi-function steering wheel that's electrically adjustable for both height and reach. Other upgrades include partially power-adjustable front seats.

In keeping with its purist intentions, the Professional is fitted with rubber floor mats, cloth seats, and a drainable floor.

A plethora of off-roading options are available, including a cable winch compatible steel front bumper, protective grilles for the headlights and indicators, dark tinted windows, roof rack and ladder, running boards, cargo nets, and a fixed trailer coupling.

Updated: Australia
The G350d Professional goes on sale in Europe from June.

According to David McCarthy, senior manager of public relations at Mercedes-Benz Australia: "We are very interested in this model and whilst the actual sales numbers wouldn’t be large, we do see a place for it in our lineup. We have to make a business case for it and that is what we are investigating."
