This year, the BMW M3 ticks over three decades old. To celebrate, BMW has announced the limited-edition M3 30 Jahre (’30 years’) model.

The M3 30 Jahre is based on the $144,900 M3 Competition pack sedan, which, with 331kW and 550Nm is already up 14kW on the standard M3 – the 30th Anniversary M3 features some exclusive highlights.

Not least among those tweaks is the Macao Blue metallic paint, a colour which premiered as an option with the original E30 M3.

All the features of the Competition pack are retained (suspension, exhaust, seats), and the 30 Years M3 sports distinctive badging in the fender vents, door sills, head rests and numbered build plate on the console.

As with all M3 versions, the car is available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed M-DCT transmission for the same price.

The BMW E30 M3 was first presented to the world media to drive in the spring of 1986. The 2.3-litre engine produced 147kW and the car weighed just 1200kg.

Through subsequent E36, E46, E90/92/93 and current F30 generations, the M3’s power and potency has increased in measure with the car’s cult status.

In 2014, BMW also offered an M5 Jahre to celebrate that model’s 30th birthday.

Just 500 of the 30th anniversary M3 will be available worldwide, and while Australia’s allocation is yet to be confirmed, a BMW Australia spokesperson told CarAdvice that we’re definitely on the car’s dance card.

“We are officially one of the most enthusiast oriented markets in the world, so there’s no way these vehicles will not be available in Australia,” BMW Australia communications manager Lenore Fletcher said.

“Details, timing and pricing are still to be confirmed, but expect to see them here this year.”
