GM recalls 10,000 Pontiacs in the US over brake issues

October 14, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Despite the Pontiac brand being officially dead, GM have recalled 10,119 Pontiac Vibe models over a cold weather brake issue.

Certain vacuum components of the Vibe’s braking system have been known to freeze in very low ambient temperatures, an issue facing owners in the US’s northern most states.

GM says that dealers will inspect and modify the brake vacuum lines on those Vibes covered by the recall. Vibes operated in warmer climate states are not being recalled, but GM has issued a service bulletin to modify the brake line free of charge.

The manufacturer says that the issue won’t prevent Vibes from coming to a stop, but it will increase stopping distances should the line freeze.

It is unclear if the Toyota Matrix, which was built along side the nearly-identical Vibe in a GM-Toyota joint-venture in California, will be recalled.

Now that is one good looking car – maybe its time for the US designers to start laying off some of their blind designers, or at the very least ask a couple of others for the views before they build these horrible things. No wonder the Japs/Euros have been wiping the floor with the US manufacturers for years.
