Fiat Chrysler trademarks Kamal name, hints at second Alfa crossover

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has trademarked a potential new name, which - if an earlier concept car is anything to go by - is likely to feature on the rump of a second Alfa Romeo SUV.

Alfa Romeo’s parent company FCA recently registered the name Kamal, linking to a crossover concept of the same name from back in 2003.

Trademark filings are intentionally vague, however, and don’t include a specific brand attached to the application - so there is no official confirmation that the Kamal name will be worn by an Alfa Romeo.

Reports suggest that the Kamal will be one of two new crossovers - the first being the upcoming Stelvio, which was spied testing this week.

The 2003 concept was a small, sporty SUV that wore a distinctive Alfa design and sported an eye-catching gold paint job.

It is believed that the production version of the CUV will sit below the Stelvio - which shares its platform with the upcoming Giulia medium sedan - and could ride on a platform that underpins the next-generation small hatchback, which is currently the Giulietta.

However, while the Kamal name was trademarked, there is no trademark for the Stelvio name in the US Patent and Trademark Office’s database. On the flip side, the Stelvio name has already been confirmed by Fiat Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne, after Italy’s Stelvio pass.

Despite this, recent shifts in Alfa’s plans indicate that there is no guarantee of the names, models and time frame for their release. The Giulia sedan has been delayed several times already, pushing back the release dates for other models further again.

We are still also yet to see the Stelvio in any form of concept, although the test mules reaffirm that Alfa has at least one SUV on the way.
