2016 Subaru WRX Special Edition celebrates 50,000 sales

Subaru is celebrating 50,000 Australian sales of its road-going rally car, the WRX, with a special edition appropriately named the WRX Special Edition.

Based on the WRX Premium variant, the special edition model gains 18-inch black BBS alloy wheels, along with red accents to the partial leather seats, door trims, air-conditioning dials and on top of the driver’s display. Manual models also add an STI gear knob.

The Special Edition’s extra equipment adds to the 2016 model-year WRX’s standard equipment list, which includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and a reversing camera, a Harmon Kardon sound system with eight speakers, automatic self-levelling LED headlights, eight-way electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry/start.

The engine of the standard WRX remains, which means there's a 2.0-litre turbocharged boxer engine producing 197kW of power and 350Nm of torque, channeled through Subaru’s trademark symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

Commanding a $2000 premium over the WRX Premium donor car, the WRX Special Edition is offered with both six-speed manual and eight-speed CVT automatic transmissions from $46,890 and $48,890 respectively before on-road costs.

The WRX Premium will be offered with a choice of five hues, Crystal Black, WR Blue, Dark Grey, Crystal White and Ice Silver.

A spokesperson for Subaru Australia confirmed with CarAdvice that the WRX Special Edition is limited to a run of 200 units, most of which are already sold.
