2007 July Sales Figures
August 6, 2007 by Alborz Fallah
June proved to another successful month for the Australian car industry. The results showed an overall increase of 11.3% over the same month last year. The biggest news however is the improved large car segment.
The large car segment rose by 18.6% (1945 vehicles), medium car segment managed 21.7% (1323 vehicles), the SUV segment managed 23.7% (1468 vehicles) and the biggest segment of all, small cars, managed a slight increase in sales by 3.9% (396 vehicles).

The results put Toyota once again at the top with a 22.2% dominance of the market (19,047 sales), ahead of Holden 14.5% (12,343) and Ford 10.4% (9006). Mazda (7.5%), Mitsubishi (6.4%), Nissan (6.0%) and Honda (6.0%) were also ahead of last year.
FCAI chief executive Andrew McKellar noted that buyers were no longer scared of larger and fuel hungry vehicles.
“In 2006 the dynamics of the automotive market were dominated by small and light car sales but this year the sales action has been more broadly based – and the July results reinforce that trend,” said Mr McKellar.
The final 2007 results are expected to top 1,000,000 vehicles for the first time.

I feel for the Mits 380, it’s a nicer car to drive than camry/aurion.
Be interesting to see how sales hold up if interest rates rise…
yes thats the most important thing,
given its an election year, interest rates probably wont rise, but who knows.
Falcon still sells better than the aurion and 380, and it is a much older vehicle. It mechanical package is still the best, all it needs is an updated body……….Orion should be awesome.
It does, just wait for someone to combine the camry/aurion sales together to beat the falcons totla sales…
The Falcon has been selling in Australia for inexcess of 40 years with a history of advertising like FPV and Sunday racing to compliment to’s established market – so it should after so many years of recognition. The Aurion however has been on sale for less then a year !!
However – on the other side of the docket, many just say that the Aurion is nothing more then just a v6 Camry (how true) so if that’s the case then the combined sales of those slaughter that of the Falcon.
And better still…
Toyota – 19 000
Ford – 9 000
Year to date… i won’t write it just to be nice on this occassion.
there you go adam,
some one just added figures like any good loyal toyota fan would. yep i was waiting for it too. i dont think it is anything to be proud of that toyota has to invest in 2 models to get the same return as ford does from 1.
but anyway who buys a car just because its manufacturer is the no.1 seller??
ive said it before and ill say it again that toyota sells a lot more because it offers a bigger range meaning if you invest in like 3 times as many models you would like to hope you can sell more units than your competitors.
fords biggest downfall is the range they offer. in like 2000 they killed the well recognised festiva and laser, and it was right at the crucial point of when people were starting to swing to smaller cars. they are only now building up some recognition with replacements in the form of the fiestia and focus. i see why they went for the focus though as it is prob one of the best in its class and it is the biggest seller over in europe. but its just a pity for ford that it takes people a little while to “gel” to a car. also the mondeo went too from the line up leaving holes in the ford line up. at least it seems now they are ready for a full assault in more classes as they used to do.
my thoughts…….
i think the focus is on the up big time as far as sales goes they are really putting together an excellent range in focus alone and not to mention by far the best styling in small cars. at least ford doesnt think a small car has to look like a googly eyed teddy bear.
anyway can some one tell me where they post sales stats on all vechicles in all classes?
Andrew, good claim, but hardly completely correct.
For one, Toyota didn’t spend much for the Aurion as the entire middle section as well as a number of mechanical parts were able to be shared with the Camry. In essence, it was mainly cosmetic (since if they didn’t put out the Aurion, there would be the cost of making the Camry V6 anyway)
Anyhow, it worked like a charm, as the Aurion sells six times as much as the Camry V6 last year. –> http://www.drive.com.au/Editor.....&vf=12
Furthermore, Toyota still outsells Ford in most of the categories where it competes in.
Yaris sells more than Fiesta.
Corolla sells more than Focus.
Falcon sells more than Aurion (if you count Aurion by itself only).
Territory sells more than Kluger
Rav4 sells better than Escape
Hilux sells better than Ranger/Courier
Hiace sells better than Transit
Those are all that are in the same segment. So looking at that, it’s not just because of a smaller range that Ford sells less than Toyota.
Yes, Toyota does sell so well because it has invested into such a broad range of vehicles and it has proven to be an extremely successful and lucrative strategic busniess decision. It’s range is also supported by Toyota’s powerful reputation for engineering quality, reliable, dependable and durable cars backed by competitive pricing, packaging and customer care.
While Ford is making a move forward and one that i support and hope they regain some of those lost fortunes in recent years, Toyota also continues to revamp it fleet. This month alone the TRD Aurion will be launched which is sure to establish it’s own niche market while giving greater recognition to the brand while the Camry receives ESP as standard while it will be upping the anti in the SUV war with the all new 200KW Kluger and V6 RAV. November brings the TRD Hilux and 200 series Cruiser to top of what has been an extensive fleet renewal.
And, if Toyota’s market share begins to erode from new competition then all Toyota will do with it’s FINANCIAL MIGHT it up the ANTI in any which way it feels necessary. Considering thier massive financial reserves, i reckon Toyota is in the best position of all to wage an extensive war then companies like Holden and Ford… wouldn’t you agree !!
BRING IT ON…
JW,
i love the way that everyone forgets that the falcon ute competes against the hilux.
funny that the 3 models that ford cares about are the falcon, territory, and falcon ute. yep all top sellers.
what i was saying is that the fiesta and focus are only relativly new and ford look to be caring about them as sales figures and advertising shows. what im getting at is that i would expect the fiesta and particularly the focus to shortly exert a bit of dominance.
yeah i dont think ford care about the ranger that much (but this may change when they start designing them in OZ) seeing they have the best seller in the falcon ute, and with the escape, well the fact they employ a mazda clone shows they just have it to try to fill a hole. thats the other thing that may change when they bring out the Kugra.
what im saying is that finally ford looks set to battle it out at the top of the sales tree rather than sit back and plod along with the under stocked range it has and think about selling cars and not just falcons.
so i see big threats to toyota on their yaris corrola lines in the short term cause that seems to be where ford is starting. and it is their own fault they lost their small car market share purely because they didnt offer anything for a short bit there
People buy Falcons and VEs cos they think they are true blue…same for Holdens and Fords in General. When in fact Holden is as true blue as Mitsubishi! And Mitsu at least doesn’t pass off its cars as aussie…holden passes its cheap korean daewoo crap as quality. If people actually realised that was the case and that the Falcon and VE have the lowest build quality ratings in the large car market they might actually look at the 380 which is safer, more secure, more efficient, better built, better priced, better backed and produces fewer emmissions than either VE of Fal. Plus its a hell of a nice car to drive to boot. Equal of both (better than omega withs its dreadful 4speed auto) and leagues ahead of the Toyotas. It also has the most torque of any of them, the aurion may be 200kw but with no torque it is useless. Plus it is classically styled and won’t date as fast as Holdens and Fords tend to.
nick,
i dont think people buy holdens and fords because of the OZ image. people dont buy anything else cause its made in australia so i dont see how cars would be any different. if anything it would be the heritage associated with the 2 companies that gain continued patrinage not necesarrily the OZ image.
i see you obviously are a mitsu fan that is sick of your car not getting recognised.
i think it is unfair to say the BF is of poor build quality. i dont know how people keep saying that. its not like it has an interior of an XF falcon competing in todays world. i honestly think they are as well put together as any other in their class. you definately cant fault the motor and box and i think the “panel flushness” or whatever people go on about is quite acceptable.
just to make you happy nick,
ive said it once and ill say it again the 380 is the best value car out there and is the most underrated.
if i ever got upset with my falcons (dont see that happening too soon) i would definately go to mitsu.
The simple answer to many on this site is…can you go to any other country and buy a product with the same value as a commo/falcon?
Can you even buy the same platform in another country before it was on sale here? NO.
But i can buy an accord, camry/aurion, maxima and the list continues, on how i can buy the same car sold here in another country…
and many are saying Ford and holden don’t invest more than Toyota or Mits??
answer that little detail for me and i might be convinced otherwise…
Holden spent a billion on the VE, Mitsu spent $600mill on the 380 and $400mill upgrading its Adelaide factory =$1billion. Toyota spent $600 on the aurion. You can buy the Comm in the middle east, NZ and now the US. And now GM is using the VE’s platform on a lot of its other cars. You can buy the 380 in NZ and the pacific and soon Malaysia where is will be proton, and mitsu is planning to either starting building the 380 for US export in SA or using the factory for the world wide production of the next gen outlander. The Aurion can be bought as a Camry in China. The Falcon I am not sure on but the Territory is avail in Thailand. If you want a car that is unique well all four big6s are. The 380 is based on a US design but 80% was changed and is now an aussie car, teh Aurion was designed in aus as was the VE. However the VE was the first comm not to be a ripped off enlarged Opel. The last 2 gens of Magna were Aussie designed and built tho. All the manufacturers invest as much as each other just about.
what are you trying to say nick? were you trying to answer adams question or what? i dont think you have if thats it.
any way with what you have said the aurion cost 600mill so JW take note the aurion did cost a bit to make even though it is essencially a camry make over?
any new model will cost a bit even if they have the platform there or not. the main thing is design and also advertising that chews up $$$ and the aurion still had to encounter these.
