Tesla Model S 75D confirmed, Australian orders open this week

A new Tesla Model S 75D variant has been accidentally revealed by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) in the US, and it has now also been confirmed for Australia.

Under California state law, select alternative fuel vehicles are allowed to use the carpool lane. When CARB updated the list of excepted vehicles this week, it included mention of the 75D - along with the more familiar 70D, 85D, P85D, 90D and P90D Model S variants.

In a report by American website The Drive, hours after the CARB list was released, a Tesla spokesperson in the US confirmed that a 75kWh Model is will be added to the facelifted Model S line-up.

The Drive also reports that the 75D will cost US$3000 more than the 70D, available with rear- and all-wheel drive, and offer a 259 mile (417km) range, 19 miles (30km) more than the 70D.

Currently, the Model S is available with 70, 85 and 90kWh battery packs. The 75D will use a new 75kWh battery developed for the upcoming Model X SUV, possibly as a replacement for the 70 base model.

CARB also listed the Model X in 75D, 90D and P90D trims, pointing to a three-tier range for Tesla’s new electric SUV.

Australia

Heath Walker, communications manager for Tesla Australia, has confirmed with CarAdvice that the company’s local arm will offer the 75kWh Model S alongside the updated range, with orders for the new 75D commencing at the end of this week.

The order page of the company's local website is still to be updated, however, and exact pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed.

Australian customers who have already ordered a new Model S will also be contacted by Tesla Australia to see if they would like to change their order to a 75D.
