2017 Audi S5 Cabriolet spied at the Nurburgring

The upcoming 2017 Audi S5 Cabriolet has been caught at the Nurburgring race track this week.

Completing the A5/S5 family, the Cabriolet variant of the S5 comes after the coupe and Sportback body styles that have been spied over the last 12 months.

Looking very much like the A5 Cabriolet spied in November, the S5 Cabriolet isn’t a radical departure from the current car, wearing a conservative, evolutionary design.

The standout difference between the regular A5 and the S5 is the quad-tailpipe outlets, which can be seen very clearly at each side of the rear bumper. Larger wheels and brakes also are also clearly visible.

The S5 will retain its fabric roof like its lesser A5 siblings, and is otherwise largely similar to the coupe.

Up front is an updated version of Audi’s single-frame grille, while the A5/S5’s rump sports redesigned tail-lights with a new LED signature.

Expect the headlights of the next-generation A5/S5 to employ a new LED signature similar to its recently-launched and closely-related A4/S4 stablemate.

As previously reported, the A5 and S5 will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s latest version of its MLB platform, known as 'MLB Evo'.

The MLB Evo architecture already underpins the latest Audi Q7 SUV and A4/S4 sedan and Avant.

Thanks to the new platform, the A5 and S5 should shed about 100 kilograms compared to the current car, which will improve performance and efficiency of the new generation.

Powering the S5 Cabriolet is likely to be the 3.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged V6 petrol engine found in the new S4, which produces 260kW and 500Nm.

The current S5 is powered by a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 that produces 245kW and 440Nm, which is shared with the previous-generation S4, therefore it’s a safe bet that the next S5 and new S4 will also share their powertrains along with their underpinnings.

If the S4 is any indication, the 3.0-litre turbo will send its power to all four wheels via a new eight-speed automatic, which replaces the old seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With the regular A5 models expected to debut later this year, it is likely that the S5 coupe, Cabriolet and Sportback will be revealed sometime in 2017.

Rumours suggest that an even more hardcore RS5 is in the works as well, however, no test vehicles have been caught testing yet.

The latest S4 sedan and Avant arrive locally in late 2016, you can read more here.
