Subaru Eyesight and IBM’s Watson supercomputer join forces

Subaru has teamed up with the Japanese arm of technology giant IBM to develop a data analytics system using IBM’s Watson supercomputer.

Parent company of Subaru, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) announced that it is collaborating with IBM on a data analysis system that will use test images sourced from driver assistance systems such as Subaru's EyeSight technology.

Famous for its appearance on US game show ‘Jeopardy’, Watson is a super computer system that could be used as a technology solution for the automotive industry, based on the IBM cloud.

This could mean that Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system could team up with IBM’s Watson as part of a ‘connected car’ network, sharing data between cars and infrastructure along with communicating information to control centers and other cars.

Aiming for “zero car accidents”, FHI and IBM are promoting technology development to achieve autonomous driving capabilities of Subaru vehicles by advancing the performance and reliability of vehicle safety systems.

The purpose of the new system is to analyse test images from advanced safety technologies, including Subaru’s EyeSight collision-avoidance system, and make evaluations using cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The EyeSight system utilises stereo cameras to detect the presence of other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Not only does EyeSight help to avoid frontal collisions, the driver assist system allows for several other preventative safety functions including adaptive cruise control and active lane keep assistance.

FHI says the system integrates and manages vast amounts of test image data, with its operation commencing this month.

The system is also expected to improve development efficiency, significantly contributing to the advancement of driver assistance technologies.

The companies say that the collaboration will help FHI - and through it, Subaru - to accelerate the development of the new analysis system while substantially evolving the level of technology available.
