Mazda CX-4 unveiled in Beijing

The all-new 2017 Mazda CX-4 has debuted at this week’s Beijing motor show, ahead of a Chinese-market launch set to occur in the months ahead.

Based on the Koeru concept that was unveiled in Frankfurt last year, the CX-4 arrives with the promise that it will “exceed existing categories and stereotypes”.

What it won’t do, is appear in Australia anytime soon. While the Koeru’s European unveiling may have suggested a wider global launch, the CX-4 will - at least initally - be offered only to the Chinese market.

But, despite its China-focussed launch, the CX-4 shares much with the wider Mazda range. Underneath is the same 2700mm wheelbase that the popular CX-5 rides on, and a pair of familiar SkyActiv petrol engines will provide power.

Although not specified, the 116kW 2.0-litre and 141kW 2.5-litre petrol engines are likely the same units that deliver 114kW and 138kW, respectively, in the Australian CX-5 range.

On the styling front, the CX-4 evolves the ‘Kodo’ styling language worn by the other Mazda models, introducing a subtly tweaked front-end look and with a long tapered roofline and a rear-end that would look at home on the current Mazda6 wagon.

That theme continues into the cabin, where a familiar dash design again features a top-mounted tablet-like screen and Mazda’s rotary dial controller in the centre console.

The CX-4’s unveiling brings few surprises for regular CarAdvice readers, with the mid-sized coupe-like SUV already revealed through spy photos and leaked press material on a number of occasions.

The question of whether we’ll ever see the new Mazda in Australia, however, remains unclear. For now, the company’s local arm has confirmed only that the CX-4 will “at the moment” be offered exclusively in China.

If that changes, the Australian branch will have its hand up.

“We like the look of the car, and think that the styling very much is in line with Australian tastes, at the moment it isn’t going to be sold outside of China,” Mazda Australia communications manager Karla Leach told CarAdvice recently.

Until then, SUV-hunting fans of the Mazda brand will have to look to the CX-5 and the smaller CX-3.
