Toyota unveils uBox concept car for Generation Z

Toyota has set its sights on a younger generation of car buyers with its latest concept vehicle, the uBox.

Said to be aimed at Generation Z, the uBox is the result of a two-year collaboration between engineers and designers at Toyota Motors North America and students at Clemson University.

Revealed at an event at The Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress and Exposure this week, the concept car was hand-built by graduate students at Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research.

The concept was born from a project dubbed ‘Deep Orange’. Designed with versatility in mind, Toyota says the uBox can be customised in a number of different ways.

The seats can be easily removed to create more space and the all-electric drivetrain can double as a power supply for Gen-Z’s raft of electronic gadgets. It’s also claimed that parts of the dash can be optimised for 3D printing.

While designing the uBox, Toyota claims that the team successfully developed an industry-first technique that involves bonding composite carbon-fibre with aluminium. In the uBox this was used to support the large glass roof.

According to Toyota, “the typical customer for uBox is a young entrepreneur who wants a vehicle that can provide utility and recreation on the weekend but that can also offer office space or other career-centric or lifestyle uses during the week.”

The Japanese car maker claims the uBox will be on offer to buyers in 2020.
