Mazda 2, CX-3, CX-9 recalled for suspension fix

Mazda has recalled 297 vehicles from its 2 city car, CX-3 compact SUV and CX-9 large SUV lines over concerns that a loose nut could cause a loss of steering control.

The recall notice affects 58 vehicles in the previous-generation 'DE' Mazda 2 line, along with 217 examples of the new CX-3 and 22 vehicles in the outgoing CX-9 range, sold between the 22nd of February 2013 to 15th of December 2015.

Mazda reports that the lower nut and bolt that secures the front suspension strut to the steering knuckle may not have been tightened properly during production, which may cause the nut to loosen and fall off.

The defect can affect one or both sides of the front suspension, potentially causing the front shock absorber and steering knuckle to separate, which would result in a loss of steering control.

VIN ranges for affected vehicles are as follows:

  • Mazda 2 JM0DE10Y2D0254532 - JM0DE10Y2E0289235
  • Mazda CX-3 JM0DK*W**10065 - JM0DK*W**116165
  • Mazda CX-9 JM0TB10A5D0406532 - JM0TB10A5F0434712

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail, and will be instructed to take their vehicle to their local Mazda dealer to have the tension of the affected nuts/bolts checked.

The nuts and bolts will be replaced and tensioned at no charge should the nut/bolt torque not meet the correct specification.
