2017 Range Rover Sport SVR spied testing, performance upgrades expected

The upgraded Range Rover Sport SVR has been spied testing in Europe, with light styling changes and key performance upgrades expected.

The revised SVR variant was spotted this week covered in the requisite swirly camouflage, obscuring the finer details of this coming update.

Despite the disguise, however, it is clear that the front bumper of this prototype differs slightly from the current car, pointing to updated front and possibly rear-end treatments.

It is also possible that Range Rover will make further styling changes closer to the model’s release date.

The major change to the updated Range Rover Sport SVR is expected to be under the bonnet, with online reports speculating that the larger air intakes concealed on the pictured prototype are feeding air to a more powerful version of the 5.0-litre supercharged V8.

The upgraded engine is reported to be shared with the new Jaguar F-Type SVR, which produces a meaty 423kW and 700Nm, mated to the Jag’s eight-speed Quickshift automatic transmission, which should improve the Range Rover’s 0-100km/h time.

The new engine generates 17kW and 20Nm over the current SVR, which claims an already-impressive 4.7 second sprint from 0-100km/h. With the new drivetrain, the the Range Rover Sport SVR would likely come much closer to a 4.0-second run.

This would position the Range Rover Sport SVR closer to its direct rivals, with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S claiming just 4.1 seconds to hit triple figures, while the much more affordable BMW X5 M promising to hit the benchmark sprint in just 4.2 seconds.

Other additions to the facelifted Sport are likely to bring interior tweaks, including an updated infotainment system - potentially the new 10.2-inch touchscreen that we saw in the recently released Evoque convertible, along with the Jaguar XE and XF sedans.

We can likely expect the upgraded Range Rover Sport SVR and a refreshed line of Range Rover Sports to be revealed sometime later this year, with the new models hitting local showrooms soon after.
