Kia Cerato Koup exits Australian market

Kia Australia has quietly removed the Kia Cerato Koup from sale in Australia, following a poor sales performance since its local launch in late 2013.

The two-door hatch was offered in Australia with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the Kia Cerato Koup and a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the Koup Turbo.

The model's local axing comes on the back of disappointing sales figures for the Koup. In the first quarter of 2016, the Koup's 28 sales amounts to less than half of its haul over the same period in 2015 (72 sales).

Kia Australia general manager media and corporate communications, Kevin Hepworth, told CarAdvice that it was a hard decision, but it had to be made.

"The Koup has followed the pro_cee’d out of the building," Hepworth said.

"Neither were easy decisions, but ones that had to be made in the cold light of dawn."

Asked whether the slow-selling Soul will follow, Hepworth said that it will "absolutely" remain in the range, and that it forms part of the company's forward product plan.

The newly updated Cerato range is due in Australia in May. Keep an eye on CarAdvice as more details emerge.
