Volvo XC90 Excellence under consideration for Australia

A high-end, even more luxurious version of the Volvo XC90 appears to be on the cards for Australia.

The local arm of the Chinese-owned Swedish brand has confirmed it is considering adding the Volvo XC90 Excellence to its ranks as a flagship model for the range, which currently tops out with the XC90 T8 R-Design plug-in hybrid model at $122,950 plus on-road costs.

What the Volvo XC90 Excellence model could bring with it - aside from a potential $150,000 price tag - includes an upmarket, four-seat cabin layout with heated/ventilated/massaging individual rear bucket seats that can be adjusted electronically, rear entertainment touchscreens, a lengthy centre console with in-built tables and heated/cooled cup holders for the custom-made crystal glasses.

The leather trim can be chosen in beige or charcoal colour, while that centre console includes a refrigerator to keep your drinks cool. Further, there's a boosted Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and the Excellence adds increased sound deadening and even noise-cancelling Pirelli rubber.

The XC90 Excellence will be sold only with the brand's T8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which teams a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an eight-speed automatic to a battery bank and electric motor. It has 235kW of power from the internal combustion engine and an additional 65kW from the batteries, and claims fuel use of just 2.1 litres per 100km.

Volvo has also shown a couple of concept models based around the Excellence concept, including a baby-seat set-up that sees the front passenger seat removed in favour of a removable capsule, and another with the front seat removed in favour of an ottoman for the rear seat occupant to put their feet up while the driver does the hard work.

Both of those are still yet to be confirmed for production, but the already opulent XC90 has plenty of potential in Australia, according to Volvo Cars Australia director of corporate and PR, Greg Bosnich.

"It’s definitely under consideration, we’ll be bringing some in in quarter four of this year for evaluation," Bosnich revealed.

He said he couldn't comment on what sort of premium such a model would bring over the standard range.

"From a pricing point of view it’s way too early to tell," Bosnich said. "I think there will be some focus groups that we’re considering."

Bosnich said some of the focus will be, clearly, on luxury car buyer such as VIP chauffeur driven cars. This sort of vehicle would likely suit those shoppers, and could give Volvo a nice niche given the majority of hire car drivers have Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8 sedans.

As for a potential on-sale date, the Volvo XC90 Excellence - if approved for sale in Australia - will arrive in showrooms in 2017.
