2017 BMW 5 Series M Sport sedan exterior and interior spy photos

Our spy photographers have landed yet another cache of photos of the next-generation BMW 5 Series. This time our team has come upon the new 5 Series sedan in M Sport trim.

Compared to earlier sedan and wagon prototypes, this M Sport sedan is wearing different front and rear bumpers. Up front, as you'd expect, there are larger, and more aggressively styled lower air intakes.

At the rear, the M Sport is fitted out with a set of prominent trapezoidal exhaust tips on either side. This prototype is also the first next-generation 5 Series sedan we've seen wearing production tail-lights.

Underneath the deliberately distracting camouflage, this latest prototype is also the first next-gen 5 Series seen in the wild without false body panels obscuring the vehicle's side surfaces.

In addition to nabbing photos of the new 5 Series' exterior, our photographers got another look at the mid-size model's interior. While there's still plenty of material covering up the dashboard, we can see the new 5 Series' instrument cluster for the first time.

As with many recent vehicles, the 5 Series' infotainment screen is a free-standing tablet-style affair.

Under the skin, the new 5 Series will use a version of the company's Carbon Core architecture. With plenty of lightweight materials employed, such as high-strength steel, aluminium and a bit of carbonfibre, the new 5 Series is expected to shed at least 100 kilograms compared to today's car.

Rumours indicate that the new 5 Series will be offered with the choice of three-, four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines, although some markets will likely give the entry-level turbocharged three-pot a skip.

The new 5 Series is expected to debut in the second half of this year. Sales in Australia are likely to start early to mid next year.
