2017 Suzuki Swift:: next-generation city car spied

The next-generation Suzuki Swift has been nabbed by our spy photographers on the streets of Europe.

Although this pre-production Swift prototype is shrouded head-to-toe with a clip-on camouflage, we can see some of the design details of the new hatchback.

At the top of the front fender we can see a character line running from the top of the headlights over the wheel arch before fading out part way through the front door. A similar line runs from the middle of the rear door to the top of the tail-lights.

There's also a set of Alfa Romeo 156-style hidden rear door handles. All of these little clues seem to confirm images that leaked out earlier this month from a dealer conference in the UK.

Reports suggest that in Europe the Swift will be available with the company's new 82kW/170Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo. Down the track, the Sport variant will be powered by a 103kW/220Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine.

We expect the new Swift to be revealed towards the end of 2016, with an official debut possibly at the Paris motor show at the beginning of October.

Australia

Although Australian availability has yet to be confirmed, we'd be surprised if the next-generation Swift isn't on the agenda of both Suzuki importers. Last year, 10,921 Swifts were sold in Australia, with the hatch accounting for around 57 percent of the brand's local sales.
