2017 BMW X1 plug-in hybrid spied testing

Our spy photographers have snapped the BMW X1 plug-in hybrid undergoing cold weather testing in the north of Europe.

With a telltale charging port on one of its front fenders, and a "Hybrid Test Vehicle" sticker along its flanks, there's little debate about what this prototype is.

Given the need to share components and keep costs down, the X1 PHEV's drivetrain will likely to be shared with the BMW 225xe Active Tourer. Both the 2 Series Active Tourer and the latest-generation X1 are based on BMW's front- and all-wheel drive UKL architecture.

Under the people mover's bonnet is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with 100kW of power and 220Nm of torque. This turbocharged petrol engine drives the front wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox.

There's also a 65kW/136Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels. In EV mode, the 225xe has a range of 41 kilometres and can hit a top speed of 125km/h.

Working together these two engines can deliver a total of 165kW of power and 385Nm of torque. In the Active Tourer, this drivetrain is good for a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 202km/h.

In the 225xe, fuel economy is rated at around 2.1L/100km under the EU cycle. Depending on the selected driving mode, the 225xe can operate as either a front-, all-, or rear-wheel drive vehicle.

Australia

BMW Australia will bolster its electrified range when it launches the X5 xDrive40e and 330e in either April or May of this year. That said, it's not entirely clear whether the X1 PHEV will be sold down under; BMW's local arm has yet to commit to the closely related 225xe Active Tourer.
