2017 Nissan Micra spied testing:: Paris debut likely for new-look micro

The all-new 2017 Nissan Micra will introduce a sharper and more style-driven look than its current six-year-old predecessor, as these new spy photos reveal.

The new 2017 Micra was first previewed with the angular Sway concept, revealed at the Geneva motor show in March last year.

Nissan openly described the Sway as a preview of things to come, with the Sway featuring many of the heavy creases and sweeping character lines that have debuted on new Nissan models - although it’s the overseas Maxima sedan and new Murano SUV, not available in Australia, that best embody the new look.

These new photos confirm that while the Sway concept’s muscular proportions will be significantly softened, its key themes will influence the look of the final production model.

That will include the latest evolution of Nissan’s ‘V-Motion’ grille design, long and angular headlights, and a long tapered roofline matched to a fast-rising beltline through the profile.

The new model also appears to be markedly larger than the outgoing model. In its current form, the Micra rides on a 2450mm wheelbase, but we could see the new-generation hatch move closer to the 2570mm footprint of the new Mazda2 - itself a notable stretch beyond its own 2490mm predecessor.

Expect the new Micra to be built on the Renault Nissan Alliance’s CMF-B platform, designed for light to small models. The same architecture will feature in the next-generation Juke compact SUV.

Reports in the past year have hinted at a significant quality boost for the new Micra, too, with Nissan focused on matching the more popular models in its segment.

Speaking with UK magazine Autocar, Nissan’s chief planning officer said: “My feeling is that a world car that isn’t suited to local conditions is a problem. We will make sure we are competitive where we want to compete.”

A range of three- and four-cylinder engines are expected to feature in the next Micra, although Nissan has yet to offer details and what we should expect to find under the bonnet.

Watch for more details to come in the months ahead, with a world premiere likely to occur at October’s Paris motor show.
