Genesis New York concept unveiled, previews upcoming G70

A new Genesis hybrid sports sedan concept has been officially unveiled at today’s New York motor show, hinting at future models from Hyundai’s luxury brand.

The Genesis New York concept, as its officially known, is a likely precursor to the new G70 range, which will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The latest concept from Genesis comes at a time when the South Korean brand is looking to reinvent itself for its next generation of cars that will take on the German and Japanese luxury brands.

The hybrid sedan is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine aided by an electric motor and battery, producing a total 180kW of power and 353Nm of torque. Its power is transferred to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The design of the concept was overseen by Hyundai’s chief designer, Peter Schreyer. The company describes the concept as ‘an elegant interpretation of a luxurious performance vehicle’.

The Genesis concept features a prominent long hood and a long dash-to-axle ratio. At the front, the well-known upright grille is present and backed up by sharp horizontal headlamps.

Side-on, the short front overhangs are in contrast with the longer rear overhangs, which the brand believes helps give the right proportions of an elegant and refined performance car.

The rear-end wears the usual concept lines with tapered body flanks and slim, elongated tail-lamps.

On the inside there are four individual seats with a futuristic interior design that houses a curved 21-inch 4K display made by LG. Genesis says the display is powered by new software that will form the direction of the brand’s human machine interface (HMI) for the future.

The concept car should act as a good indicator of where we will see the new luxury brand heading, with the concept’s proportions likely to resemble that of the production G70.

The G70 range is expected some time next year and is already confirmed for Australia.

The Genesis G70 will be based on a bespoke platform that is not part of any current Hyundai product. It will also be available with a 3.3-litre V6 that is currently making 270kW and 510Nm of torque in other Genesis models.

Hyundai Australia public relations manager, Guido Schenken, says the G70 will have a great deal of potential for our market.

“A small sedan has great potential in the Australian market, a small RWD with a twin-turbo powerful V6 can do wonders in attracting new buyers to the brand.”

Before that arrives however, the current Hyundai Genesis, will be re-branded as a Genesis G80 in the first half of 2017.
