Nissan launches ‘micromobility’ program at New York motor show

Nissan has once again shown that the future of travel is very much at the forefront of its business plan, today announcing it will showcase four Nissan New Mobility Concepts (NNMC) at the upcoming New York motor show.

The announcement of Nissan’s latest foray into eco-friendly ‘micromobility’ travel comes just a week after CarAdvice reported on Nissan’s long-term vision for ‘Intelligent Mobility’.

In 2014, the establishment of Nissan Future Lab affirmed the Japanese car maker’s commitment to combating the challenges of future travel that are inevitably coming our way.

Director of Nissan Future Lab, Rachel Nguyen, says the key to dealing with the issues of future travel is to plan for them today.

"As large cities continue to grow into megacities globally, we need to better understand how transportation is changing and anticipate what transportation needs will look like in the future.

“Urbanisation and the growth of megacities – particularly in developing countries – is the biggest challenge facing the automotive industry,” she said.

A fleet of 10 NNMCs are currently doing service over on the west coast of the US as part of a collaboration with San Francisco-based Scoot Networks. Known locally as Scoot Quads, the eco-friendly cars are at home in San Fran’s busy and congested traffic conditions.

Based on the Renault Twizy, the NNMC measures a measly 2330 millimetres in length and 1236mm in width. Power will come from a 12.6kW electric motor powered by a 61kWh lithium-ion battery capable of carrying its two occupants 64 kilometres at a top speed of 40km/h.

The Renault Twizy is currently on sale in select European markets and will be available in Canada in late 2016. For the time being, the NNMCs are being specially imported by Nissan for the duration of the research period.

Renault Australia brought a Twizy into the country for promotional purposes in 2014, but, for now, legal obstacles have kept it from a local market launch.
