Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet revealed

The first-ever Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet has been revealed as the flagship offering in the drop-top C-Class model range.

The all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet will - like the sedan, wagon and coupe models - be offered with the brand's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine in two power outputs: the entry-level version with 350kW and 650Nm, or the oomphy S model with 375kW and 700Nm.

The rear-drive model is available solely with a seven-speed multi-clutch transmission, no matter what power level.

As you'd expect, performance is claimed to be manic. It can hit 100km/h from standstill in a claimed 4.1 seconds in C63 S guise, while the standard model is just a touch slower (4.2sec). Fuel use is expected to be about 9.0L/100km.

It is a little slower than the Coupe model in terms of performance, and that comes down to a bit of extra weight from the folding fabric roof - the Cabriolet tips the scales in S specification at 1925kg, where the Coupe is 1800kg in identical spec. According to the company, it can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50km/h and the operation takes 20 seconds.

The boot space is hampered by the roof, though - it is rated at 355 litres with the lid in place, or just 260L with it down.

The styling of the C63 model is decidedly more sporty than the regular C Coupe variants, with flared front and rear wheel arches, a broader track and aggressive body kit and quad exhaust pipes.

Standard fit items include AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping (and Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes that pair the stiffness of the suspension to the steering, engine and transmission response), and there's a limited slip differential on the C63 S, and dynamic engine mounts.

Inside, the C63 Cabriolet is plush and sporty. There's Artico man-made leather trim on dashboard with contrasting stitching, and an IWC clock adds some extra wow. There is Mercedes-Benz's Airscarf neck-level heating so you can keep your neck warm while you listen the exhaust in the cooler months, too.

Mercedes-AMG CEO, Tobias Moers, said in a statement that this new model rounds out the range nicely.

"The C-Class is a decisive factor in our company's success. The new combination of intensive open-air ambience and powerful V8 engine is unique in the segment and perfectly supplements our large C-Class range," said Moers.

The new Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet will be sold exclusively in the powered-up S specification, and will hit showrooms in December.

Expect it to be priced slightly higher than the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe ($162,400 plus on-road costs).
