Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Hypercar to be built with Red Bull Racing Formula One team

Aston Martin has announced a new partnership with the Red Bull Racing Formula One team that will not only see the pair create a new hyper car, but also signals the British marque's return (in some form) to the Formula One world championship.

The partnership will see world-famous Formula 1 race car designer Adrian Newey join forces with Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichman to create what the British company describes as a “ground-breaking” hypercar - one that will take on the project name of Aston Martin AM-RB 001.

Although details remain scarce for now, Aston Martin is believed to already be talking to customers, with deliveries of the new hypercar set for 2018. Production is expected to be limited to just 100 units.

Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer has been coy about his brand entering F1 as a racing team, having previously stated that any association to the sport would need to be more than just a logo on a car, which the hypercar partnership with Red Bull Racing will provide.

Even so, the Aston Martin logo will be adorned on this year’s Red Bull Racing cars, with the famous 'wings' positioned on the Red Bull racers’ nose and sides. This marks the first time the Aston Martin logo has been seen on a Formula 1 car since 1960. The team will still be known by its official TAG-Heuer sponsorship, however.

“Formula 1 offers the ultimate global stage to build wider awareness of the Aston Martin brand," Palmer said.

"However, this partnership will deliver even more than that, when the hypercar that Aston Martin and Adrian Newey are in the process of developing, hits the road.”

The hypercar is expected to use aerodynamic and material capabilities learned from F1 cars, alongside Aston Martin's long-standing supercar building expertise.

Speaking to the media at the official unveiling of the partnership, Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner joked that he’d “had worse company cars” before, adding that the hypercar will have “Formula 1-type [level’s] of performance”.

Meanwhile, Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo was seen showing up to the event in an Aston Martin Rapide - no doubt a step up from his 'company cars' from the previous two seasons, when Red Bull Racing was tied to both Infiniti and Renault.

Aston Martin first raced in F1 at the 1922 French Grand Prix, with the manufacturer’s last race being with the DBR5 in the 1960 World Championship season.
