Proton Jumbuck, Great Wall SA220 & V240 ANCAP results

By Matt Brogan |

Australia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), has issued crash test results for three imported utes on the Australian market. All three scored poorly.

The highly anticipated Great Wall Motors SA220 and V240 utes from China received only two-stars out of a possible five, while the Malaysian Proton Jumbuck ute only rated a single star.

ANCAP Chair, Mr Lauchlan McIntosh, said the results were of great concern, particularly since commercial vehicles are now more commonly rating four- and even five-stars. Many passenger vehicles of course are five-star rated.

Mr McIntosh also expressed concern about the widening gap between Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and ANCAP’s safety testing.

“Crash statistics show that occupants of one- or two-stars vehicles have twice the risk of receiving life-threatening injuries in a crash, compared with four- or five-star vehicles, at a time when four- and five-star ratings are becoming increasingly available for new car buyers,” Mr McIntosh said.

“New vehicles that achieve only a one- or two-star ANCAP rating, while meeting the ADRs, are a cause for concern.

“The results for the Great Wall vehicles were particularly disappointing as these are new models to the market. The SA220 and the Jumbuck lack airbags and other safety features that are expected as standard equipment by new car buyers.

“The V240 has dual airbags but these failed to protect the driver and passenger from injury in our crash tests.”

The three utilities performed poorly in the ANCAP offset crash test – all experienced loss of cabin structural integrity, with poor head and leg protection at impact. There were high injury measurements for driver and passenger in all three vehicles.

    not suprising…

  • Carl

Well well well what did people really expect from countries that dump slave labour products on our shores and our governments just smile and bend over for more!!!!!

  • Škoda Freak

These results aren’t going to stop the uneducated public who want something for nothing, unfortunately.

  • Jason

Well I guess Caradvice can hand back their long-term tester the Proton Jumbuck because I wouldn’t be recommending a 1 star car to a friend unless they only intended to drive it around the paddock!

    • Philthy

At least the Jumbuck is an old vehicle that’s about to be retired. The other two are new to the market.

Once again commercial vehicle operators get the short end of the stick.

      • Škoda Freak

True Philthy. Workplace health and safety issues come to mind here.

  • Safety Frist

I wonder what the ratings were for the similar bodied Rodeo’s that are the now the second hand alternative (including being the same price) as the Chinese versions sold by GWM????
Not that I’d buy any of them for safety, but how would a 5* Yaris style vehicle stand up against an offset Frontal with the 2* GWM???? Just Curious

  • Yanzo

haha, isat in a great wall. they feel cheap

    • toxic_horse

True, but go and sit in a hilux or navira, they feel just as bad.

      • Martin

Navara is only a 3-star too!

  • Richo

If I was an employee I would demand a Commodore or a Falcon ute as a compancy car, no way would I get my boss to buy me one of these death traps, plus another concern is the handling dynamics, ANCAP doesnt rate how poorly these imported utes handle, brake, steer and grip

    • demonaz

You’ll also be demanding for a voluntary redundancy.

      • LessQQ

they don’t have those for Centrelink recipients.

  • demonaz

What Caradvice fails to mention is that other manufacturers don’t fare much better in terms of utility vehicle safety. Straight from ANCAP (http://www.ancap.com.au/results/search/?search_type=category&category=31)

    Ford Ranger (2007 onwards) – 3 stars
    Holden Colorado (2008 onwards) – 3 stars
    Isuzu D-max (2008 onwards) – 3 stars
    Mahindra Pik-up (2007 onwards) – 2 stars
    Mazda BT-50 (2007 onwards) – 3 stars
    Nissan Navara (2008 onwards) – 3 stars

The only utes that performed well were the Hilux and Triton (both 4 stars).

So before youse pay out Proton and GWM, look at the bigger picture. New manufacturers like GWM are not that far behind players like Ford, Holden and Mazda.

    • Joofas

…and nor should they be given the GWM220 & 240 are obvious Rodeo Rip-Offs. The interior is almost an identical ripoff of the RA Rodeo for both vehicles, let alone the exteriors pre RA (220) and post RA (240), save for the different nose cones…

      • Karl

        …..even the headlights are navara D22 rip-offs

  • Adam

“New manufacturers like GWM are not that far behind players like Ford, Holden and Mazda”. Uh… yes they are. They are from China for god sakes.

  • Ed

Not surprising…these cars will sell as they seems to be good value for money for today.

  • Demonaz

To Adam, did you even read my post? The fact that Navaras, Colorados and BT-50s are getting 3 stars means they are not that much safer than the Great Wall urea discussed.

Also what you’re saying is that no good products come out of china?

    • Bob

After a couple of recent trips to China, and having dealt with Chinese manufacturers directly through business (not the automotive industry), I would say I would be surprised to find out that any fully chinese designed and manufactured products are of a genuinely good standard.

Its a culture where labour is cheap and cheap is king. I found that they really don’t see quality in the same way the west does. To them its all about the gleam. If you can’t see it (i.e. the quality of the steel in the chassis), then it doesn’t count. I would recommend nobody touches one of these utes.

  • Joofas

    …that would be largely accurate!

    • mad max

Correct. I travel to China on a regular basis and most of their cars are total rubbish. Its why Chinese people buy European and Japanese cars when they can. I have also driven these two utes in South America and they are just junk. After less than a year the A pillar mouldings and and the dash tops are turning white from UV attack. What will they be like after 3 years. If I want a car like this, at the prices they sell for, I will buy a second hand Toyota, Nissan or Holden/Isuzu. The safety might be similar but the reliability, resale and ownership experiance will be way better.

  • Chuck Chunder

So this is what a chinese farmer would use to carry his food to market thats been fertilised with human waste or the fish from the fish farms that are in Industry affected waterways. Some of that food getts too Oz(HEAVE).

    • mad max

You don’t know how true that is. The number of times i’ve been sick in China…

  • Andrew M

    demonaz,
You also forget to mention the Falcon and commodore utes that come in 5 star guise.

What do you mean they (GWM) arent that far behind????
All they do is copy other manufacturers and they still cant keep up.

    Im totally with you Richo……..
I cant bring myself down to the 3rd world standards of owning a Jap ute.
Give me Falcon ute first, but if that never existed I’d go straight for the Commie and put up with a little impracticality

    • Tony

good luck with your Falcodore ute off unsealed roads champ

      • Andrew M

Good luck with your Jap ute on roads champ!!
The only reason the japs build a ute for off road is because they are such a handfull to keep on the road.

Also good luck trying to pull a load with the gutless motors

        • Tony

i would think a 4wd turbo diesel tows pretty well.

I wonder what your response is going to be?

          • Andrew M

you mean the 3.0L hilux diesel that is still out towed by the Falcon??

          • Andrew M

no response on the handling and lack of on road manners, so I assume you agree??

          • Andrew M

Also the 4×4 models are in a different class of vehicles.

The falcon and commy utes compete with the 4×2 jap models. They arent much good for getting off the black stuff either.

            Keep it real “champ”

What next?? are you going to shock us with how bad the falcon and commy utes are at carrying 9 passengers legally like a people mover can??

    • Andrew

The commodore ute may come in 5 stars when it is retested, but falcon ute will not be fitted with 6 airbags becasue according to ford airbags are not a priority, are they saying safety isnt a priority of ute buyers?

      • Andrew M

Ford doesnt need 6 airbags to get 5 atars.

But being the first to get 5 stars in its class to me says ford is the one with safety as a priority.

      • Andrew M

Also if you read the history ford has always had the safer ute.

Read the safety scores as the years go by, the Falcon ute has always been first in safety with the Commodore second

  • swampdawg

Crash the Jumbuck pictured and the steering column spears into yr chest while the quad bike takes your head off.

    • Jason

Ha ha ha…I almost didn’t want to laugh because it’s a real possibility!

  • Harley Stone

The Chinese still haven’t started to look UNDER the outer shell and copy the inner structure of the cars as well. So they are building rice-pacer cars…….

  • Safety Frist

Wondering if someone at CA could take the time out to explain how all these companies like Great Wall Motors and Proton and such all end up with the (supposed) blatant copy of already existing vehicles??
It appears by many of the responses here that a lot of your reader base could learn a lot about how up and comming companies actually go out and buy the tooling (in some cases the complete factory) of old out dated models and then convert them into their own with minor styling changes…… Just a thought that you could run an automotive education section.

    • toxic_horse

      We all know this.
However thse chinise companys don’t do that, they copy the design of a existing model then build it.
I personally don’t care if they copy the design of a existing car. specially for a work ute. just about everthing we buy these days is made in china. in a few years no one will think twice about chinise cars. just like korean cars of today.

    • Andrew M

Im not too sure that GWM paid anything to use others designs, I could be wrong.

The chinese car manufacturers have been dragged through court before for blatent copying/stealing of designs So Im more inclined to believe that these examples werent bought

  • AG

People should be objective about this and lets not turn this into a political debate, Mitshubishi Express Van is only one star safety rating and many other major brand’s utes are 2-3stars. Do people complaint about it? Many people just want to see them fail coz prejudice of course, but they don’t understand that China is up and coming, look around you almost everything is made in China. People should learn to live with that, we live in a global village now and trade is two way traffic. Australia’s economy very much depends on Chinese demand for resouces and services, vice versa they need to export their products. Besides a ute is a ute how different could it be from a design perspctive, all the aircraft share many componets and design but you don’t hear Airbus acuses Boeing for stealing.

  • Craig

Well, I may not be ready to but a ute from GWM, but I have started buying stock in the company. You can mock all you want, but in a few years this company will be mainline and doing well. Does everyone forget so quickly how Honda and Yamaha started in motorcycles? China is here to stay and, with the domestic market support GWM will have, they have the backing to grow.

Yes, their cars lack things now. Give them 3 or 4 years and the cars and utes will be better and grabbing market share. They are already in 120 countries.

  • David

The first thing you notice about Great Walls website is the lack of a ‘safety’ information page. Twenty years ago it might have been the norm in car manufacturing to ignore safety and concentrate on price and gimmicks (leather in a ute?) but not now.

  • http://? OZZY

INTRODUCTION OF GWM INTO AUSTRALIAN MARKET HAS
TURNED OUR MOTORING BACK TO ITS INFANCY.
    GOOD HELP US ALL.

  • http://? OZZY

    GRAIG ME MATE,

THEY MAYBE IN 120 COUNTRIES, SO IS MALARIA
THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE SHOULD HAVE IT ALSO, DOES IT?

  • http://? OZZY

TOXIC-HORSE I CAN NOT BELIEVE YOU WOULD COMPARE GW WITH NAVARA AND HILUX.
IT’S LIKE COMPARING DOG SH.T WITH MARS BAR, THEY DO LOOK A LIKE, A BIT. TRY THE TASTE TEST YOU’LL SOON NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE.
    CHEERS

  • Lily

2 star rating? Certainly beats the 92 Ford Courier ute I commute in with my hubby on a daily basis that has no air bags, no abs, nothing. Air bags and ABS as standard is definitely a better option for me and probably for a lot of other people where economical car prices is a deal breaker. I simply do not have $40k to spend on a new Hilux as much as I would like one.
And please, can we have some constructive comments from people who have driven these cars? I’m not interested in what people think is “right” or “wrong” and plain bagging the car just because it’s Chinese. Pricing is cheap but it’s also a strategy to break into the market. Get over it.

  • Trevor

Hey all, lots of discussion on the V240. Well I will make the statement i own one and it would have to be the best twin cab I have ever owned. It was a little under powered that was easily fixed with cold air intake setup as the stock box is very restrictive and a nice sports muffler. There has been a company in WA testing these rigs and are coming up with up to 20 horses extra from these two cheap mods. This has been on a dyno. I find my rig very comfortable. It handles very well, it tows great I have had over one tonne on my trailer and a cab full of people with no problems. Just a great rig over all with no issues after 10,000 km. So give it ago and stop bagging it

    Hey all!

I’m with Lily and her comments. Mind you I do drive a Toyota 4×2 dual cab…it didn’t come with Air-con {I had to pay over a $1000 for that, Fog lights are also extra, no back bumper with the model. I bought a diesel which is more expensive to fill the car with; where I live it costs me about $100 to fill the tank. The only thing it came with is electric windows, no hands phone conection, and a dvd player. I spent another $1000 to de-daggify it…hated the wheels so I had mags put on it, and the pinstriping to help me recongize it in the crowd. It added up to over $35,000 and for what?? Nothing much!
No-one mentioned that with the Great Wall you get 10% off any purchases made for the car e.g floor mats etc. I test drove the V240 and found it just as good as the 4×2 to drive…with more features! We are all not rich and beggers cant be choosers. It has a Holden Rodeo Chassy and powered by a Mitsubishi Motor. I saw on the news how a family walked without a scratch when involved in a head-on in their X240; their next car was another X240! Go figure eh? All I can say to the wowzers is do keep an open mind, didn’t Kia have a simular start?
