2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 4Matic revealed ahead of Australian launch

Just weeks after the official unveiling of its more everyday E-Class siblings, the new 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 sedan has been unveiled.

Confirmed first with CarAdvice at this month's Geneva motor  show, the new large performance sedan follows the mid-sized C43 and the SLC43 roadster to become the third model offered as part of Mercedes-AMG's re-branding of variants that would have previously worn a '450 AMG Sport' badge.

Importantly, the new E43 is also the first Mercedes-AMG variant in the all-new E-Class range, with the hero E63 not expected to be revealed until later this year at the earliest.

And, while its smaller '43' stablemates are driven by the same 3.0-litre V6 'biturbo' engine, the E43 pumps up power from 270kW to a more size-appropriate 295kW. Torque for all three variants is fixed at 520Nm, however.

The E43 benefits from a larger pair of turbochargers at 1.1 bar and "sophisticated software" tweaks, with the power sent to the all-wheel-drive 4Matic system through a 9G-Tronic nine-speed auto.

With all of that in play, AMG promises a fairly sharp 0-100km/h time of 4.6 seconds - frightfully close to the 4.2-second claim of BMW's five-year-old and still current F10 M5, which is driven now by a 423kW 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.

Likewise, the outgoing E63 AMG S is not far ahead with its 4.1-second dash, but just as the E43 is helped by its all-wheel-drive traction, so is the overseas 4Matic version of the E63, with a 3.6-second claim.

The tuning house credits part of the E43's pace to a rapid-shift tune of the nine-speed auto transmission, with the Sport and Sport Plus driving modes boasting a fast double-declutching function.

Fuel consumption is listed at 8.3L/100km, compared to 9.9L/100km in the older and bigger-engined M5 sedan.

Suspension is by a sports tune of Mercedes-Benz's Air Body Control system, matched to an adaptive damping system with Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes.

The braking package is made up of 360x36mm perforated discs and four-piston callipers up front, and 360x26mm discs and one-piston callipors at the back end.

The E43 is dressed in a more sporting outfit than its regular counterparts, with an AMG sports bumper up front, large 19-inch AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels at the sides and a pair of chrome-plated quad-flow exhaust tips flanking a subtle and compact diffuser at the rear.

In the cabin there's a flat-bottom sports steering in black nappa leather with red contrast stitch, along with a pair of tube-style dials and a 4.5-inch multifunction display in the instrument cluster.

Australia

The E43 will make its global debut at the New York motor show later this month, ahead of a 2017 debut for the Australian market. Exact timing and pricing is still to be confirmed.
