The V12-powered 2017 Lamborghini Centenario has been officially unveiled at the 2016 Geneva motor show, accompanied by the news that every one of the celebratory Ferruccio Lamborghini centenary special editions has already been sold.
Following in the tyre tracks of Lamborghini one-offs such as the Reventon, Sesto Elemento, Aventador J and Veneno, the Lamborghini Centenario represents a special 100-year tribute to the birth of the company’s founder.
Powered by a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine outputting 566kW and revving all the way to 8600rpm, Lamborghini says the Centenario is graced with the iconic Italian brand’s most powerful engine ever.
Teaming with Lamborghini’s Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) gearbox, and aided by permanent four-wheel drive, the 1520kg (dry) Centenario claims 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0-300 km/h in 23.5 seconds, and a top speed of more than 350km/h.
Now, those numbers would usually impress, if it weren’t for the just-revealed 1120kW/2000Nm Koenigsegg Regera, which its maker ‘estimates’ will hit 400km/h from a standstill in 20 seconds.
With its body, monocoque “and all other body parts” finished in either gloss or matt carbon-fibre, Lamborghini says the Centenario delivers a weight-to-power ratio of 2.64kg/kW – just shy of the entirely mental 999kg Sesto Elemento’s figure of 2.35kg/kW.
Apart from extreme aero – including ducts within the front headlight casings – a monstrous rear diffuser, a hexagonal carbon-fibre and glass engine cover, and ‘Y’-shaped tail-lights, the Centenario also features an extendable rear wing.
Residing in the body at low speeds or when stationary, the wing can extend up by 150mm and can rotate up to 15 degrees depending on the optimal aerodynamic efficiency required, dynamic conditions and/or driving mode selected.
The latest bull to leave Sant’Agata is also highlighted by a brand-new rear-wheel-steering system.
Said to provide increased agility, stability and response, the system turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the steering angle at low speeds and in the same direction to the steering angle at high speeds.
Measuring 4.9-metres long and standing 1.1m high, the Lamborghini Centenario rides on specially developed Pirelli PZero tyres wrapped around central-locking 20- and 21-inch front and rear forged aluminium wheels, and is equipped with carbon ceramic brakes and Lamborghini’s magnetorheological suspension and ‘dynamic steering’.
Inside, it’s classic fighter jet-inspired Lambo, with a digital instrument display, lightweight carbon-fibre sports seats and lashings of Alcantara.
In a nod to practicality, the new Centenario also features a high-definition central 10.1-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay. There’s even “space for two helmets” in the supercar’s front trunk.
Referred to by Lamborghini as “the ultimate one-off”, just 20 Lamborghini Centenario coupes and 20 Centenario roadsters will be produced, however, despite their 1.75 million euro ($2.65 million) starting price, all are already sold.
According to outgoing Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann, “The Centenario is a car that perfectly combines tradition and innovation.”
“It looks to the future while honouring the legend that is Ferruccio Lamborghini,” Winkelmann said.
“It is the most fitting tribute to Ferruccio Lamborghini in his centenary year: a man who created an exceptional brand, believed that anything was possible, and produced extraordinary, iconic cars.”
