Skoda VisionS large SUV premieres in Geneva

Skoda has staged the world premiere of its brand new VisionS six-seat SUV concept ahead of the 2016 Geneva motor show.

The edgy family crossover is expected to morph into a production seven-seater called the Skoda Kodiak, which is tipped to make its world premiere later this year at the Paris motor show.

The Vision S concept car, which looks largely production-ready, gives a clear indication of how Skoda will grow its SUV range beyond the smaller Yeti, and shows off a softer and classier side to its overall design language.

Skoda’s first three-row SUV uses components from the same MQB ‘toolkit’ as the new Volkswagen Tiguan, as well as diverse models such as the Golf, Passat and it own Superb.

As we know, the new 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan will include a seven-seat version. The Skoda will naturally share much with this model.

At 4700mm long, 1910mm wide, 1680mm tall and sitting on a 2790mm wheelbase, the Vision S is about bang on the same dimensions as a Hyundai Santa Fe, albeit with an even longer wheelbase to boost cabin space.

Under the bonnet of the Vision S concept is a plug-in hybrid drivetrain comprising a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and electric motors on each axle — the front of which has an integrated six-speed DSG. This also gives it all-wheel-drive ability without the need for mechanical coupling via something like a Haldex clutch. A 12.4kWh battery pack sits in front of the rear axle.

Skoda claims a combined system output of 165kW, giving it a 0-100km/h sprint time of a claimed 7.4 seconds. Fuel use is claimed to be only 1.9 litres per 100km, while pure electric mode is 50km — meaning short-commuters can use it as an EV.

Naturally, expect production versions of the ‘Kodiak’ to be available with regular petrol and diesel engines, with the PHEV to be the flagship offering

Meantime, the futuristic cabin offers large tablet screens both embedded in the fascia and ahead of the passenger, plus large TFT screens ahead of the driver. Middle-row passengers get a tablet of their own.

Australia

Reports indicate an early 2017 showroom debut in Europe for the Skoda ‘Kodiak’, meaning an Australian premiere later next year seems likely — a little later than we’ve been told previously. We’ll keep you posted.
