Borgward BX5 and Projekt BX6 TS unveiled in Geneva

The Borgward BX5 prototype and the Borgward Projekt BX6 TS concept have been revealed ahead of the 2016 Geneva motor show.

The Borgward BX5 measures 4483mm long, 1876mm wide, 1677mm tall and rides on a 2685mm wheelbase, placing it in a class below the seven-seat 4713mm BX7 SUV that was unveiled last year.

Depending on the configuration of the rear seats, the BX5's boot is said to accommodate between 500 and 1200 litres worth of gear.

As befitting its show car status, the BX5 on show in Geneva is said to be motivated by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a 105kW/240Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Powering the rear wheels is a 85kW/195Nm electric motor. The whole system is tied together via an electronically controlled permanent all-wheel drive system. It's claimed that the BX5 prototype is capable of up to 55 kilometres of tailpipe emissions-free driving.

The BX5 will share its Geneva stage with the Projekt BX6 TS, a "coupe" SUV based on the BX5's platform. To go along with its sportier demeanour, the BX6 features a revised roof line and hind quarters, lowered suspension, and an active rear spoiler.

The Projekt BX6 TS concept is powered by a more powerful plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Under the bonnet, the "coupe" features a 200kW turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. This is coupled to a 110kW electric motor for the rear axle and a permanent all-wheel drive system.

Geneva's BX5 prototype rides on 19-inch alloy wheels paired with 235/55 rubber, while the Projekt BX6 TS sits on 20-inch rims matched with 245/45 tyres.

The Borgward BX7 is slated to go on sale in China during the second quarter of 2016, with sales in German speaking countries to follow by the end of the 2017. The BX5 and BX6 will be launched in the "coming years".

In Europe, Borgward says that its vehicles will be available exclusively with either plug-in hybrid or full electric drivetrains. In China, turbocharged petrol drivetrains will also be offered.

Chinese automaker Foton is reportedly providing much of the funding for the revived Borgward brand. The company will initially produce cars at a factory in China and is slated to announce the location of a new German plant before the year is out.
