BMW M8 could be the brand’s new flagship model

There is talk of an all-new model in the ranks – the BMW 8 Series – and such a flagship model could well form the basis for a technologically-advanced high-performance M8 model.

The all-new BMW 8 Series is rumoured to take the form of a lengthy luxury coupe with two doors, or a four-door "Gran Coupe", something that has plenty of appeal to the well-heeled around the world

It would make sense to do an M version – yes, it could be called the M8 (which is text talk for ‘mate’).

The company currently has the M6 models as its flagship variants, but an ultra-luxury performance creation to compete with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe and Bentley Continental.

BMW M product manager Carsten Pries made it clear that an M8 – or 8 Series M performance model – would appear to be a logical conclusion, though he suggested that the rumours any such 8 Series model are yet to be confirmed.

“If our BMW AG colleagues ever decided to build an 8 Series, we would obviously look at it,” he said. Such a model was presaged by the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept, pictured below.

When asked at what point BMW M gets involved in the process when it comes to releasing a new model, Pries suggested that sooner is always better.

“As early as possible, or as early as necessary,” he said.

“When we do the paperwork at the strategic early phase, then we have the biggest possibility to influence what will be developed as a base model,” Pries said.

As for the expanding portfolio of M and M Performance models – 10 of each, at the current count, but there are three more M products due in the next couple of years – Pries suggested that there is no new pressure to get involved even sooner.

“It is fairly stable,” he said. “We wait for the base model from what BMW AG do, then we have to potentially spend extra or additional assets to reset the scene, or set the requisites right, so we can build our performance model on top of that.

“We may spend time and potentially money on things that we ideally would have wished for [to be included] in the base model,” he said.

“It’s so important to talk very early with our BMW colleagues, and that is what we do,” Pries said.
