DS E-Tense electric coupe concept revealed

“516Nm and silence, 402hp and zero emissions.” That’s the nutshell summary that Citroen’s luxury marque DS offers for its E-Tense concept, speaking to both its power and the ultra-green drive system that provides it.

Unveiled just hours after a first revealing teaser appeared on the brand’s Facebook page, the E-Tense is presented as a technology and styling showcase for PSA Peugeot Citroen’s new premium brand.

At 4.72 metres long, the E-Tense is around 500mm longer than a new-generation Audi TT, while its 1.29m height makes it nearly 50mm shorter from the ground.

The concept’s styling builds on the DS brand’s now familiar family styling, while elements of the 2014 DS Divine concept can also be seen across its face.

There is little doubt however that the E-Tense is the DS brand’s most powerfully styled concept to date - although, as a standalone brand, the E-Tense has only two years of history to compete with for that status.

"Our ambition was to create a high-performance electric GT. A car that embodies refinement, technology, and DS design. A car that inspires dreams. A car that gives you the overpowering urge to get behind the wheel,” the company said in a statement today.

As its name suggests, the E-Tense is powered entirely by an electric drive system that produces 300kW of power and 516Nm of torque.

CarAdvice had previously speculated that the E-Tense might be an all-wheel-drive affair, but today’s unveiling brings confirmation that only two wheels are driven. Which two, however, have not been confirmed.

DS has confirmed a carbon monocoque construction, however, and although its weight has not been specified, the E-Tense promises a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Top speed is listed at 250km/h.

As an electric vehicle, driving range is also a major focus, and DS claims that around 310 kilometres of mixed urban/highway driving is possible between charges.

Citroen has yet to confirm any production plans for the E-Tense, but as a flagship model designed to put the DS brand on the map, it could do far worse.
