2017 McLaren 570GT:: most practical McLaren ever to start at $406,800

The McLaren 570GT, the third piece in the McLaren Sports Series puzzle, has been revealed a week out from its Geneva motor show debut.

Touted as the most luxurious, refined and practical McLaren built to date, the McLaren 570GT will sit alongside the 570S and 540C coupes – and an already confirmed 570S Spider due to be unveiled in 2017 – in the British company’s ‘entry level’ performance tier.

Based on the same ‘modified for comfort’ MonoCell II carbon-fibre chassis as the 570S – and clearly borrowing much in terms of styling – the 1350kg (dry) 570GT features the same 420kW/600Nm mid-engined twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 and seven-speed paddle-shifted transmission as the $379,000 super sports car.

The 570GT also continues McLaren’s use of its signature dihedral scissor-style doors, but they have been tweaked to provide a more upward arc to aid ingress and egress.

According to McLaren, the new two-seat 570GT is not only “practical enough for everyday use”, it is in fact, “...the most refined and road-biased McLaren yet.”

Designed with day-to-day usability and long-distance touring comfort at the forefront, the latest McLaren supercar rides on specially-tuned suspension – with 15 and 10 per cent reduced spring rates front and rear respectively – as well as bespoke ‘noise cancelling’ Pirelli P Zero tyres – claimed to reduce in-cabin road noise by up to three decibels.

Luxury focus aside, and despite its additional 37kg over the 570S, the 570GT claims 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds, 0-200km/h in 9.8s, a top speed of 328km/h and a quarter mile time of 11.1s.

And while the 570GT retains McLaren’s independent adaptive dampers – which can be varied between ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ settings - the UK brand claims the supercar can return fuel consumption figures of 10.7 litres per 100km.

The biggest difference compared with the 570S, however, along with a fixed glass panoramic roof, is a handy glass hatch that provides access to 220 litres of storage space atop the 570GT’s leather-lined rear ‘touring deck’.

Framed in carbon-fibre, McLaren says the side-opening hatch “opens on the kerbside whether left- or right-hand drive”. The 150-litre front cargo space seen on both the 570S and 540C, carries over unchanged.

Unique to the 570GT, though, is a new extended and fixed rear spoiler that stands 10mm taller than that fitted to the back of the Sports Series coupes, and iron brake discs (370mm front/350mm rear) with four-piston calipers front and rear. The new ‘grand tourer’ also rides on model-specific 15-spoke cast alloy wheels, measuring 19 inches in diameter up front, and 20 inches out back.

Cementing the new model’s luxury theme are standard eight-way electrically adjustable heated leather sports seats, an ‘easy entry/exit’ electric steering column, front and rear parking sensors, and a quieter exhaust system compared with that of the 570S.

Soft-close doors - as seen on some high-end German marques and the Hyundai Genesis – have also been added.

The 570S’s optional eight-speaker McLaren audio plus system is standard equipment on the 570GT, though, a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system is optionally available.

McLaren Automotive global public relations manager Dave Eden told CarAdvice, local pricing for the McLaren 570GT will start at $406,800 – $27,800 up on the 570S – with global deliveries set to start from July.
