Video: Volkswagen Golf R against Scirocco R

September 21, 2009 by George Skentzos

Following its official debut at the Frankfurt motor show, the new Golf R has been propelled to the top of the hot hatch stakes proving that good things do come in small packages.

In Volkswagen’s latest video teaser it is taking sibling rivalry to new heights by pitting the Golf R against its namesake stablemate – the Scirocco R.

With that, there really is no reason for VW to offer the Golf in a 2 door configuration any more – Scirocco- bring it on!!

  2. Yanzo says:

    omfg…

  3. QwkEddie says:

The R20 shouldn’t be in that clip it looks out of place on the track and the Scirocco makes it look very ordinary indeed.

  4. Jester says:

How much of a box is that Golf R20 – give us Scirocco you lost VW Australia managers, give us something decent.

  5. MeestaNob says:

I’m sorry, but I hope it’s significantly faster than the Golf, cause I can barely tell them apart… :(

It just looks more like a Peugot to me…

  6. Jake02 says:

It pisses me off that the Golf R gets 4Motion and yet the Scirocco had to stick with FWD. I mean seriously WTF?

And VW Australia, there is no need for the Golf Wagon to be brought here (Skoda among others do them much better), but there certainly is a need for the Scirocco. Wake up and listen to the consumer!!!

    • ZX10 says:

Disappointing maybe, but pisses you off?
I thought you were a Skoda man?
Or have you sold your soul for a Scirocco?

      • Jake02 says:

lol I am a Skoda man yes (in that i own one) but the Scirocco is pretty darn nice! But they’re all VW Group cars so I’m not bovvered. It would piss me off yes! Two similar cars developed at the same time and the more attractive one doesn’t get 4Motion? Hmmmmm that makes no sense! :S

        • Pete says:

Jake, maybe when (if) the Scirocco arrives in Oz the price difference between the 2 x R20s will make sense. HOWEVER – if the Scirocco R20 is priced the same as the Golf R20 then there is a problem.

        • Zx10 says:

I reakon if VW engineers were allowed to make a RWD Scirocco with that tasty donk it would be a fiendish unit.
Then it would be a tough decision.
          AWD Golf R weapon………….. OR
          RWD Scirocco R rocket!

  7. Lukaas says:

The pricing is where its going to come down to… and practicality of course.

You either want a 4WD hatch 2.0 liter turbo that has everyday drivability and practicality… or a coupish hatch that is only set to be FWD and little room..

I’m liking the scirocco’s shape but the R20 is gun…

  8. jon says:

Well my partner and I have decided on an Golf R20 through salary sacrifice, but I seriously wish we could get the Scirroco here. But I guess we will be getting an R20 instead, I will be definitely taking the 3 door its not quite as boxy. To me the 5 door just isn`t sporty enough looking, for the money.

    • Fasthonda says:

I’ve always felt the same way in regards to the 5 door. The 3 door has always looked sportier and it does take away some of that boxy look.
I suppose there are some people that simply like the convenience of a 5 door.

      • jon says:

Yeah true the 5 door is alot more practical but for me if I was paying 65k for a Golf and don`t get me wrong I think VW`s are great cars, my Bora 4motion has been brilliant, but I`d be wanting something that looks sporty.

    • confuse says:

Your “partner”? As in business? Or defacto wife?
Either way there could be a lot of fighting over who gets to drive!

  9. Neo Utopia says:

I agree the scirocco should have AWD, even if it up the price by a few thousand.

  10. Phil R32 says:

Highly tuned 4 cylinder over beautiful V6 growl?! No chance….I will stick with my R32, which returns 9.2 litres per 100km. Both new cars beautiful and Scirocco should get AWD but suppose weight is stopping that from happening. VW Australia has lost the plot not bringing the Scirocco to these shores….their loss and other brands will pick up the lost sales.

  11. Liam says:

I would have bought a Scirocco if I could. But I couldn’t so I got a Golf R with an Audi badge instead!

  12. Andy says:

    Liam – you mean TT?

I would buy a Scirocco if I could. I’ve even contemlated importing one!
If VW Aus had a scirocco in their lineup, I’d buy it. Straight up. I’d probably prefer the normal one to the R (as crazy as that sounds).

Please VW stop teasing me! I just want one. In the words of Jeremy Clarkson: “Want one. Want one badly!”
