2017 Borgward BX5 spied testing

Reborn premium marque Borgward has been spied testing a new SUV that is expected to be known as the BX5 when it hits the market in the months ahead.

Borgward first reappeared in 2015 after more than 54 years in the wilderness, revealing its premium new BX7 SUV at the Frankfurt motor show.

The BX7 has been pegged as a rival to models like the BMW X5, but at 4713mm long, it is in fact positioned between the 4652mm X3 and the 4886mm X5.

The model shown here would appear to be closer in size to the Volkswagen Tiguan - which measures 4432mm long in its outgoing first-generation form and 4490mm long for the new third-gen model - if not smaller.

The BX5 will eventually be sandwiched between the BX7 and an even smaller BX3 variant, which would play in the segment currently owned by the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

It is expected that buyers will get their first look at the BX5 at next month’s Geneva motor show, where Borgward has confirmed, mysteriously, that it will unveil “more than just a world premiere”.
