2016 Australian Formula One Grand Prix details

The first race of the 2016 Formula One season is again in Melbourne this year, and it promises to be full of surprises now with Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Renault all competing as full works teams with Mclaren-Honda.

The race event, which takes place from March 17-20, will set the scene for what may possibly be the most competitive season since the new rule changes for V6 turbos took place in 2014.

Outfits like Ferrari are now in hot pursuit of the dominant Mercedes-AMG team, while Renault has bought the Lotus team and Honda seeks to make up for its disappointing 2015 season with McLaren.

The Australian Formula One Grand Prix is generally regarded worldwide as one of the best races for attending fans, which is also why it has continued to garner significant crowds while most other races have struggled.

This year’s event is no different, with a host of activities for families and enthusiasts alike. Apart from the manufacturer marquees and a host of amazing cars on display, there are plenty of other attractions both on and off the track.

Sights and sounds to front up for will include demonstrations by the Australian Air Force, V8 Supercars, GT class and Porsche Carrera Cup races, the Shannons Historic demonstration, and stunt shows across the weekend.

Perhaps the most interesting of all, though, is the ultimate speed comparison that attempts to show the difference in speed between road cars, race cars and an F1 car.

This year will see a Minardi V12 Formula One car facing off against a Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car and a Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate. As per previous years, the cars will be released in intervals that will see the Formula One car chasing the other two with a time plenty.

The GT3 will be piloted by Mercedes-Benz Chief Driving Instructor, Peter Hackett, while the C63 will have five-time MotoGP World Champion Mick Doohan in the pilot's seat. (The F1 car will be driven by former V8 Supercars driver Cameron McConville).

A full schedule of the on-track events can be found here, with a list of off-track activities here.

Tickets for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix start from $39 for Thursday and go up to $99 for the Sunday race day. Four-day passes for the whole event start from $185.
